Support Spinoff-Are your parents/ILS welcomed to retire in your home?

My parents say that they are going to travel around, doing a month with each child, then the remaining 5 winter months in FL.

My MIL is looking to retire at 45.

MY FIL is on disablity and currently resides with his mother, who I hope lives forever.

I think it would be too much of a strain on my marriage to have ILs living with me...but that would mean I would have to pay for their assisted living facilites..

I would have no issue with any of them if they need to down the road. My father is older then my mother so he will probably die well before she does. I would love to have her stay if she wanted to. Same goes for my in-laws but i get along with them.

My mom is retired, but she has her house and she works part time. My IL's live in another country.

We live in a 1 BR apartment in Manhattan but once we do get a house, they will be welcome- although I know my mom wants to stay in her own home.

I would let any of them live at my home if need be. I feel a strong responsibility to family and I would never want anyone to be somewhere where they dont want to be. Its their choice. They can live with me or find a place.

They're welcome but I'm pretty sure my sister plans on taking my parents and my sister-in-law would be taking my in-laws.

Absolutely!!! Family is the most important thing to me and if they ever, any of them, needed to live with us there is always room for them. They raised us, sheltered us for 20 years...we owe them!!!

If they need to and we can accommodate...i have no problem with it.

They took care of us, wiping our azz, paying for us yadda yadda for about 18+++ years....

IMO if they need us, we will be there

Re: Support Spinoff-Are your parents/ILS welcomed to retire in your home?

nooooo

I could never live w/ the ILs - ever.

As far as my parents, I'd have NO freedom. Even when I'm 40something and a parent, they'd still try to control me.

Re: Support Spinoff-Are your parents/ILS welcomed to retire in your home?

Only if they were struggling financially. It would have to be an extreme situation to have them retire with us (IMO)

That is also my opinion now- when I am older - more into our marriage and with children, my opinion might change, as many do with age . . .

ETA: I know that I could never be 100% comfortable having the ILs with us, and it would be so unfair to be one sided and expect Brian to have my parents, hence the reason for the extreme situation. Unless of course there was a separate area for them- an extension or a basement apartment- in that case of course, they are more than welcome to retire with us!

I could never in my heart of hearts turn any of them away, especially not my parents who have helped us out so much and are currently helping us as well.

I never want to put my parents into nursing homes unless it is medically necessary. So if there is a time at any point where they need/want to be around us but aren't in such bad shape that they need to be in homes they will be more than welcome to come be with us. This would apply to my own parents or my in-laws.

If you saw my post on parenting there is no way in hell my mother will ever be invited to live with me.
Not close with my dad so he's NO.
DH says NO for his parents as well even though we all get along well.

My initial reaction was my parents only, however I know that if the time comes that my MIL cannot live on her own, there'd be no way I could turn her away.

Re: Support Spinoff-Are your parents/ILS welcomed to retire in your home?

yes...I would never ever be able to turn a family member down if thats what we all decided on. If they were dead set against a home, I would feel I had no choice.

Me and DH already assume my Mom will be with us someday and thats why we are likly to buy a house with an apt for her so it will transition easier.

My Mom took in my great grandmother when I was about 3 so I lived with her till she died when I was 17 and I saw what my Mom went through , how hard it was, but cant imagine her being anywhere but where she was, with us.

My Dad no...He wouldnt, he has his wife.

My FIL is gone, its just my MIL and I would think she would go with my oldest BIL as he tends to take care if her the most now, not to mention is a millionaire and better resources to take care of as well. Their family has always taken care of the grandparents so I dont see if being any different with my MIL.

I wouldnt want my Mom or my MIL in a home EVER. Its unfathomable to me.

Re: Support Spinoff-Are your parents/ILS welcomed to retire in your home?

I would absolutely take in my parents, IL's, and any borthers or sisters or nieces or nephews...

Family is so very important to me, and I would open my house in a heartbeat! DH feels the same way, or if it came to a time where our parents needed ust to move in with them, we would rent out our place and move right in! I would NEVER EVER put our parents in a nursing home..I saw how horrible it was when my Grandpa was in one..it was HORRENDOUSChat Icon
