Such a sad, sad story. Please pray for this little boy... UPDATE 10/03...UPDATE 10/14...UPDATE 12/09...Sad UPDATE 1/14
My brother's boyfriend, Jim (yeah, you heard me correctly  ) has a best friend who's son is gravely ill.
The 3 year old boy woke up from a nap, and the mom saw that his eyes looked crossed. She brought him to the ER. They performed some MRI's and found that the little boy has a tumor WRAPPED and interwoven through and around his spinal cord. 
He has had some surgeries already to remove the tumor, but they can't get all of it, as it is in WAY too dangerous of a location.
This family lives in Florida, but will be flying to NY to see some specialist at Sloan Kettering.
This is the email update Jim received today:
I just spoke to Chrissie. Mike had another surgery today so that the surgeons could get more tissue needed to make the diagnosis. He was in surgery for about 3 1/2 hours, long enough for the pathologists to see that they had enough to work with. Chrissie said they actually went into the spinal cord to get the tissue they needed. Mike is doing fine now but will be in the PICU overnight just for monitoring. The plan is to get Mike back to NY later on this week, hopefully on Thursday. Chrissie has him set up with a doctor at Sloane Kettering who thinks he will have a bed ready for him by then. Chrissie and Mike will fly on a private plane with medical professionals so that she won't have the added stress of taking Mike on a commercial flight. Chrissie is holding up as best as she can. She is being very strong so that she can be there for Mike. At this point she is very anxious to get a definitive diagnosis so that they can get moving with whatever treatment Mike will need. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.
Please pray for this little boy and his mom and dad.
Since Jim told me about this last week, I have not been able to think of anything else.

UPDATE 10/03:

Here's the latest update Jim received last night:
Hi everyone,
We are here. Mike was great all the way! He was enthralled with all of the machines on the ambulance in Florida and loved the plane. By the time we got in the ambulance in NJ I think he was getting to his wits end with the traveling but he was still good. He was really happy to see Grandpa waiting for him at his room and then after being tortured by some nurses and a blood pressure cuff, he ate a good dinner and is asleep now.
I just wanted to give you all our room number and phone number. We are in Memorial Sloan Kettering Room ***. Our phone number is *******. I have my cell on all the time too so feel free to call on that too. Thanks for all of your good thoughts and prayers! We miss you all. Love you!!

UPDATE 10/14:
The little boy (Michael) was released from Sloane Kettering. This is the email update I just received:
"I figured that I'd give you a quick update. Not much has been going on. Michael was discharged a week ago on Saturday. He had a follow-up on Tuesday. The neuro-oncologist feels that based on Michael's growth charts from all of his pediatricians, that he was probably born with this tumor. This is strangely comforting since it indicates that he has had this for a while and he's been ok.
If this tumor has not grown or changed, they are probably going to just watch it and wait. He would go back for scans every couple of weeks. Chemo would not likely have an effect on a tumor that isn't malignant or growing. Chrissie was a little surprised. She wasn't too keen on just leaving it alone. After she thought about it, she realized that it wouldn't make much sense to pump him full of chemo to make her feel like something was being done. What mom would want to just sit back and wait? It is amazing how together she is!
Chrissie is really hoping that she gets some answers tomorrow. They are expecting some more labs results. Keep your fingers crossed!"
So again, let's keep praying for this strong little boy.

UPDATE 12/09:
Little Michael is not doing well with his treatment. He is in dire need of some blood donations. Here is what Michael's mom has emailed to me: 
MICHAEL WEINSTEIN Needs Blood & Platelets
3 year old Michael is currently a patient at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. His treatment will require regular blood and platelet transfusions. Michael and family would deeply appreciate your donation of blood and/or platelets and hopes you will ask others you know to donate. Donations not used by Michael will be released for use by other patients many of whom are children.
Designated donations for Michael must be made in the Blood Donor Room of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

UPDATE 1/14:
Here is the latest update on little Michael. I'm afraid, it is not good.
"Hey All,
As most of you know, Chrissie took Michael for a scan and a few tests today. The results were not as good as they wished for. Although, the cancer around the spine and brain has not grown, it has now spread to his brain stem. Michael's doctors are going to meet and discuss their next course of action. It seems that they will change his drug regimen and start over. Chrissie will find out more in the next two days.
I know a lot of you have been calling her and e-mailing her. She really appreciates it, but she's not in the mood to talk about today just yet. (Ask her about the text message that I had to decipher!) Please don't take offense if she doesn't get back to you as quickly as she normally does. She is going to take a few days to be with her family and mourn her grandmother.

Yes...the grandmother passed away yesterday, and Chrissie has had all of this to deal with. God....I could never imagine.
