STAR and Property taxes

How long after you live in a house can you file for STAR and when does it go into effect?

Thanks!

Re: STAR and Property taxes

for regular STAR - you only have to file once - i dont think it matters how long you lived there- but there is a deadline (March 1st for TOwn of Brookhaven)

Correct. it will be in your December tax bill. Everything is explained in the form you have to complete.

DH and I are going thru the process b/c we have to get our driver's license changed over to the new address and we're waiting for the copy of the deed from our lawyer to arrive and then we'll be ready.

Thanks girls!

I am moving in after March 1st so I guess I missed the deadline. Can I apply for STAR even if I am not the owner yet?

Kerry is going thru this and they stipulated as part of the contract that the owner would apply for Star before she moved in, so that Star could be transferred.

Is this a fairly easy process? Does the owner really have to do much? I pitched it to the RE agent but I don't know if it's possible. I wonder how easy it is.

Ask Kerry cause she's going through it right now since she's closing 3/7/07.

Her SN is kerrycec03

Re: STAR and Property taxes

Betsy is correct, we are closing 3/7/07 and since STAR has to be applied for by 3/1/07 we had our attorney write in the contract that the current owners would apply for STAR (which they did last week). All they needed to do was file one form (it was so easy). Obviously next year DH and I will have to apply ourselves, but it should effect our tax bill mid summer-fall of 2007 (from what the town of Islip told us).

Luckily our sellers are very easy going. I could imagine it could get hairy, but if they want to sell their home, they'll apply. I find it weird so many people haven't

Re: STAR and Property taxes

Unfortunately I close 2/19 and my contract has already been signed.. is there enought time for me to close on 2/19 and still file by 3/1? What paperwork needs to be filed along with the form?

You need a copy of the house deed. And your driver's license needs to be changed ASAP and copied and provided to the Town with your application.

Do you know for a fact they don't already have STAR? You can call the town and find out.

Re: STAR and Property taxes

I just realized that in Nassau County the deadline was January 1st. So I have plenty of time to get my drivers license changed and get the deed so we can file for next school year.

Still, call the Town and ask them if there is anything that could be done. Doesn't hurt to ask!Chat Icon Chat Icon

We just received a copy of our contract to review and our lawyer added a section about having the sellers apply for STAR.

We met with our attorney last night and he said STAR cannot be transferred. So basically I have to wait another year to apply? I'm in Nassau County.

CALL THE TOWN ABOUT THAT! Your lawyer may be mistaken SERIOUSLY! How STAR works is if the previous owneer has it and you purchased your house after the filing date, that STAR discount does transfered over for the fiscal year, but you have to apply the following year. CALL YOUR TOWN!!!

He said that if the owners dont already have STAR they cannot apply for it and transfer it over. It's different if they already have it.

I will still call the town though. Thanks

Yea, if they apply for 2007 and they reside in the house after the filing date, then it is transferable. Def. call to double check.
