Actually ACOG changed their recommendations to every three years for a pap as well (provided your last one was negative) but many practices, including the one I go to, continue to do every year. I personally know two women who had normal paps, came back three years later as recommended, and both then had abnormal paps and high grade HPV. Anecdotal but enough to make me question the 3 year guideline.

I cannot even imagine any decent doctor having you wait 3 years. Deplorable!

Actually the mammo recommendations have changed. You can Google it I can’t totally remember off hand but I believe yearly mammos starting at 45 now. From what I had read they found many down sides to early and yearly screening.

Ummm the insurance guidelines have changed, not doctors recommendations. Wait till 45, see what happens. Thank GOD I have good doctors!

Actually no, you are wrong. It is the American Cancer Society and other organizations. Studies found that in women of average risk - the down sides of screening prior to 45 did not always outweigh the benefits. I’d you google it you will find all the studies. In a nutshell they found the cancers detected and treated early (prior to 45) likely may never have been a problem but the impact of that treatment can cause problems down the line for the person that they may never had and more cancers also the extra radiation etc from numerous false findings. Don’t go by me I’m probably not doing this justice since I am not a doctor but I was told this by several doctors - look it up, it’s true.

And for what it’s worth for your obnoxious threat - I’m not 45 and I have had a mammo. I did the research and was on the fence and had the mammo before the guidance changed. I do think it’s a decision that has pros and cons - something else to think about - years of unnecessary mammos also awaken and cause cancer that may have never been an issue. I know people that had breast cancer later in life with no family history who followed the guidance religiously. 20 years of mammos and radiation does add up. Also the radiation has been found to “awaken” cancer cells. Screening has clear benefits but there are risks. It’s something to think about and stay up to date on! Don’t state something as fact that you don’t know!

I just turned 42 and got my 2nd mammo done. I'm pretty consistent with going to the doctor PCP & GYN...always have been. It's something my Mom instilled in me and my sister since we were young (always at the doctor, dentist, etc). Thankfully she did because we did IVF for both our kids and if I had a fear of medical procedures I would have been in deep shit Chat Icon

IMO I would say at the very least go to the GYN. A good GYN will not only screen you and do a pap but also blood work including a full panel which can catch deficiencies and abnormal things. They can also do your referral for a mammo. I was so nervous for a mammo but it literally was uncomfortable for a few minutes then it was over.

Also DO NOT dismiss any weird symptoms that you may have. We have a family friend who was just recently diagnosed with stage 2 bladder cancer. She had symptoms for months and pretty much blew them off and now she will likely have to have her bladder removed. Thank God she will survive but chances are if she went earlier and they caught it she would have been able to keep her bladder.

Having a child actually made me not afraid of going to doctors anymore lol. That being said, I’m 37 and I see my gp once a year where I also get blood work 1x/yr and paps when needed (I think every 2-3 years). Dentist every 6 months. Eye doctor once a year. No mammo’s yet until 40.

I want my kid to know she has a momma who takes care of herself and sets a good example for her. My parents never pushed the doctor thing on me and I waited so long to take good care of myself. Don’t wait any longer. Just do it!!!

Not deplorable. My dr. Only gives them 3 years and pretty sure thats all my insurance will cover unless there is a condition mandating otherwise.
