what do you think is center spoke of the whirl wheel that is celeb gossip?
Is the the paparazzi and "news"people reporting the stories that drives the hunger for more, OR
Is it the insatiable appetit of "ordinary" people to get an "idea" (however flawed) of what it is to lead a life like those of the rich and famous?
what came first, the chicken or the egg?
and why the hell do we care?

imho
agreed. You will also often see celebs buying gossip rags - they want to know what other celebs are up to also!

Although a few gossip magazines were around before this, celebrities started to make the news for no reason around the time of Studio 54. Papers like The Post would publish random pictures of celebs for almost no reason and I think that kind of sparked it all.
The explosion of gossip magazines, then networks like E!, basically devoted to celebrity, and the internet blogs -- I think that it all started with the paparazzi but it's grown into the general public becoming insatiable.

it peaks my interest because the pics show celebrity life and how (usually) glamorous and fun it is, and
the drama helps make me less jealous of them!
