So it's not ok to talk on a cell phone while I am driving but...

...it is perfectly legal to read the newspaper while driving to work?


I swear this morning I am on the service road of the LIE and glance over at a light and there is an older gentleman with the newspaper spread out across his steering wheel- just casually perusing the pages like he is at his breakfast table!
The light changes, we start to go, and I glance over again and he is still doing it- while driving down the service road!

I swear to you- I can't take it.
So I can get a huge ticket and points for having a cell phone to my ear, but reading a newspaper across your steering wheel while the car is in motion is fine. No law on the books against that one.

I see that all the time - newspapers, books.
I commute via express bus, so being higher up, we get to see a bit more, although sometimes we <ahem> see a bit too much .

thats completely crazy! I've definitely seen people applying make-up and driving though too- I would hope if a police officer saw that that the person would get a ticket even if its not techinically illegal but who knows!

Last year, I saw a guy at 7:00 am on the ssp eating breakfast off of a plate and eating with a fork and knife. Also years ago, I saw a girl rearend somebody on Nicolls Rd because she was applying deoderant.

Its ridiculous. I once saw a man eating a bowl of cereal on Sunrise. Bowl in one hand, scooping and slurping away with the other

Confession: I used to read while I drove in San Antonio (before I moved to NY) However, to be fair the traffic was so bad you put your in park and turned off the engine at times. I used to leave mine in neutral and use the hand brake to move forward.

I have never driven anything more than 5mph hour and read. That’s crazy. I still can’t figure out how people text or call on their phones. I tried to make a call once (urgent need) and maybe it was the stress but I couldn’t concentrate on the road at the phone, scared me to death, I pulled over.

I’ve seen people pray. That scared me LOL. This lady was driving 80mph down a road in PA and I look over as I pass her and her eyes are closed, she has her hands on the wheel in prayer with beads. I tried to stay as far ahead of her as possible.

I think the biggest issue with driving is everyone feels entitled to their space and do not realize they are sharing a road with others. Even if they realize it they just don’t care. Its all about me, me, me, mine, mine, mine.
