I am all for reform but honestly, why the focus is always on NYC employees (teachers, NYPD, FDNY, Corrections) is beyond me! They work in the $hittiest areas under some of the crappiest conditions with NO support from the public or mayor.

I am going to assume it's b/c he is balancing the NYC budget and employees are a huge part of that, both past and present.

I just don't think it's the mayor's fault that this is happening. if anything, it's the fault of past mayors and past collective bargaining agreements NOT doing the correct math to see that what they promised back then is just untenable now.

so he'll be the bad cop, for lack of a better term.

like I've said, I am facing a forced fulough. I am a public employee with NO UNION to help me. no one to fight for me. but on the flip side, what I do have isn't that terrible.

and to be honest. I don't find pension padding to be all that noble to begin with. and those who did it SHOULD be ashamed of themselves.. Chat Icon

I dont believe in pension padding either. I've posted before...I dont think it is far for a cop to work 10 hrs of OT for 19 years and than work 60 hrs of OT his last year to pad his pension. But than you have guys like my DH who consistantly work 40+hours of OT a month (and has for his 11 year career). Why should his OT not be included in his pension?

Pension padding is not fair, but neither is not including OT at all in pensions (like the new NYPD recruits). Why can't they just take the average over their career?

Its the unfortunate case of the bad apples ruining it for everyone.
(i) The exclusion for OT is solely based upon retirees' systematic abuse of the system by padding their pensions. Complaints about pension padding aren't new, yet retirees continued to do it. Did anyone think this could continue indefinitely? As much as it is unfair that the city has taken away this perk from new recruits, it was unfair of all those retired police officers to abuse the system. Perhaps the new recruits should address this issue with the PBA and blame the guilty parties who ruined it for everyone.

(ii) Proposed reduction in disability benefits. This is a benefit that is of utmost importance to police officers and it is a shame that it is being considered for reduction. Unfortunately, it is another benefit that is systematically abused. I know several police officers who are allegedly "disabled" yet they are playing golf and working other jobs "on the side" (i.e. security, bouncing, etc.) Unfortunately, this will be detrimental to many, yet, those "bad apples" will ruin it for those people as well. So, those who will receive reduced benefits can thank those few who abuse the system.

Perhaps the new recruits should address these issues with the PBA and blame the guilty parties who ruined it for everyone.

How much more can they give???? NYPD new recruits only get 10 vacation days until they hit 5 years. They dont get to include overtime in their pensions. They now have to work 25 years as opposed to 20 (meanwhile the average life expectancy of a cop after retirement is 7 years). They dont get to strike to "fight" for what they want like other unions do.

Honestly, these benefits would sound pretty good to recent college grads. Yet, despite these reduced benefits, has there been a decrease in enrollment at the Academy?

Pension Padding

That was eye opening and an excellent read.

Don't get me started on Yonkers...totally disgusting what is going on with the police and fire department and the padding. It is literally crippling the city. I think pension padding is a serious, serious problem that needs to be addressed.

The enrollment in the academy has decreased as has the quality of candidates. They are hurting so bad for candidates they now accept candidates with misdemeanors on their records.

All Bloomberg cares about is numbers. If people think the police department is deplorable now, give it another 5-10 years. It will be embarassing!

Once you take something away, you never get it back in the NYPD. There is nothing to discuss. They'll never negotiate these things back in the contract and they will never be offered again.

And while yes, some college grads would be happy to have a job, being a cop, fireman, corrections officer is a lot more emotionally, mentally and physically stressful and draining than other jobs. I dont care what anyone says.

I am not saying you are wrong, but when you say 'you don't care what anyone says' that is just silly.

Although, as I watched a cop blow a light only to end up at the same deli as I did, I can see why that is stressful.

I know its a stressful job, but there are plenty of stressful jobs. In all actuality, every job right now is stressful due to the state of the economy.

I agree it is tough being in the public sector. But there has to be an overhaul of sorts because what we're working with in NY has gone to "ish". Its not just a few rotten apples. More like a bushel of bad apples with a few good thrown in considering the low standards that have been enacted over the past years.

Why is my statement ignorant? I think cops do A LOT of good. That doesn't mean what I saw didn't happen or that it is an ignorant comment.

As I said in an earlier post, I don't think anyone should begrudge people for making money, we should all be able to make as much money as humanly possible.

I'm going to respectfully, but strongly, disagree with this. We're just no longer at a point where it's okay for some people to be making the amounts of money they're making. There is a limit. People making millions, hundreds of millions, and billions of dollars a year, and putting it in the bank to rot because there's no chance they could ever spend it all...to me, that's not okay when people around the world are struggling to survive. Call me a socialist, or a commie, but to me this is totally unjust.

I'm beginning to think I'm a socialist commie myself!

I live in America, where there should be no limit on what I can make. If I had the chance to make a million dollars a year, why should that not be allowed? There is a man that is a professional athlete that at one point made $100M a year. He has charities and learning centers in various parts of the country to help inner city kids have a an opportunity to learn in a better environment. Without him making that much money, these places wouldn't exist. I would never begrudge you if you make that much money, we shouldn't do it to them either. If the economy didn't allow for it, they would not make it.

Ophelia just said that if every New Yorker kicked in $10 we'd make a windfall.

These athletes are famous because of the fans - the fans in the city in which they play. I'm sorry - 100m? Give a mill to the city who made you rich.

at the end of the day, giving to one takes away from another. it is outlandish to me that people are worried about their EXTRA $$ in their pensions for a future that our very demands are making more uncertain. Chat Icon

It's not extra money though - it's their money - as Jennasmom said, the city took their pensions and invested it - making $4bn in the process.

I am speaking about pension padding specifically.

the whole chrstimas bonus thing is a bit uncertain to me. I don't know enough about it to have an opinion.

What's been stated here about the "so-called" Christmas bonus is fact.

The city borrowed their pension money in 1968 with the promise of repaying it to retired members at $12,000 a year. BTW they've made 4bill since 1986 - who knows how much the city made before then.

Ophelia - I hear you about the unions - but I want to point out that the FDNY and NYPD unions decided to keep quiet about the $12,000 dispute and they did so UNTIL Bloomberg called it a Christmas bonus - and then they could no longer keep quiet because he LIED to the people of NYC.

He is disgusting.

Im the wife of a NYPD 2nd Grade Det. My husband was in 911 & was there in the clean up for 2 months afterward. Yes cleaning up body parts & debris. From what i understand that isnt what his job entailed. But guess what? He did it. Cause alot of other people sure couldnt & wouldnt. We will not know the long term effects my husband will have & hopefully & i pray everday that we will never have to worry about it. But for those families that do, that lose their parents or spouse due to these type of things shoudl absolutely not lose their spouses or parents pension in which they have earned & put the time into. These NY/FD that risked their lives for NY didnt have to. They just did. In any case we will all have different opinions on this. But the fact remains is that most cops & firemen love their jobs & respect their jobs. Of course no matter where u work there will be bad apples. That will never change. But overall they put their lives on the line everday trying to keep all of us safe. I would never disrespect that. Those who do should be ashamed but i guess those who do also think a person who throws a ball or catches one should be paid millions!Chat Icon

I can't stand the comparison of everyday jobs to athletes. There is a market for them to make money. If that market wasn't there, they wouldn't be able to make that money. As I said in an earlier post, I don't think anyone should begrudge people for making money, we should all be able to make as much money as humanly possible. It is just that taxpayers will be heard when their pockets are being affected to the point that they can't handle anymore.

Personally i dont care who stands what. I just think that everday hardworking people trhat work almost 365 days a year doing jobs that put their lives on the line & families in fear deserve more then most. I also think educators & miners & farmers deserve more too. But hey thats life. We all deserve to make a solid living. And yes there is a market for those athletes to make that money. But if im not mistaken isnt that too from taxpayers?? I mean stadiums are paid for by taxpayers. Tickets are bought by the tax payer. The concession stands, ummmm yup the tax payer is buying that food & the apparel. I dont see the tax payer crying over that. Complain all u want about the tax payers pockets. But id rather be safe & help a family from tragedy or 911 illness etc then buy or pay for that stuff. Just sayin.

I think that the pension and tax cuts are intended to make up for the lousy salary they make.

It's also important to point out that if they are lucky enough to make it to retirement, an FDNY firefighter's life expectancy is drastically cut short. The average life expectancy of a firefighter after retirement is 7 years. There has to be some kind of incentive to take a job like this.

That is a choice that the tax payer makes. No one is forcing you to spend money on these teams or athletes. Some stadiums are partially funded by taxpayer money, but I'm pretty sure that money gets recouped.

Steinbrenner & a bunch of investors bought the Yankees for 10mil. They made the NY Yankees a brand not just a team. But we the tax payer buy it purchase it & allow it. So u bi!ch about cops salary but hey its ok to spend 200 bucks on a Yankee Jersey & 500 bucks for 2 tickets. hmmmm priorties folks

So that would give me the right to drive through red lights? I understand that they have tough jobs and I respect them greatly. I don't think that they can break the laws of the road and get a free pass from it. My comment wasn't really serious (although it did happen), but I will defend what I said.

The Yankees aren't rich because of NY. They are a successful organization that puts a good product on the field that people choose to support. I can't stand the Yankees, but they they had an owner that invested in them and made him and many other people lots of money.

The correlation was that the poster said that no one should make millions of dollars a year. I was just wondering if it is no one or just athletes.

I don't know how hard this is to understand, but you CHOOSE to do those things. I am FORCED to pay a lot of money towards taxes.

Although, as I watched a cop blow a light only to end up at the same deli as I did, I can see why that is stressful.

SORRY THIS IS JUST DUMB! Seriously? I would love to see you do what they do. Yup thats right. I want to see you jump fences & chase a guy 4 blocks because he was selling drugs to an undercover & then ran when he got spooked. Then i want you to be the wife when u get that call, that because he was jumping fences & chasing dealers he jumped the guy & well maybe he got hurt. There is blood & not sure if its due to teh dealer. YES DEAR I WAS THAT WIFE! U have no idea what stress is & yes Im a senior accountant & its tax season!!! NOT EVEN CLOSE

So that would give me the right to drive through red lights? I understand that they have tough jobs and I respect them greatly. I don't think that they can break the laws of the road and get a free pass from it. My comment wasn't really serious (although it did happen), but I will defend what I said.

Random everday folk do it. Shoot i do it sometimes. Of course its not right. But seriously to make that statement & refer to it as stressful facetiously - DUMB!
