Shorts - wtf!

My daughter is 5 and due to her eczema we keep her in long pants. In the summer she wears a dress with leggings but recently she complains that she wants to wear shorts so I went to Target (alone) to get some.

WHAT THE F-....it seems like all the shorts are tiny.
For example, I think the shorts would be this length (to me it seems so short)

Thats like the length of my boxers.

I think shorts should be like 90s basketball length not 70s basketball length.

Am I just an old fogey?

Even for me...I went to the store to get shorts (I only have workout shorts) and they seem so tight and short, they're like 3 inches above my knee, I want them to go TO my knee and not so tight (yes, I'm stuck in the 90s)

Re: Shorts - wtf!

I think for young girls- like age 5- shorts are just that way. I'm ok with it because I don't see it as sexual yet. They have small legs, no curves, etc.
Once they start getting to 8-9-10 years old, I can see wanting something more modest because their bodies are changing and it starts become more scandalous looking

DD has on shorts like this today.
They are short, and on me they would be too short for my liking, but they don't look inappropriate or sexy to me on her ,kwim?

Long shorts like the ones you posted on the basketball players, are not really feminine, so you'd see them more for boys

Re: Shorts - wtf!

Check Amazon. Search for bicycle shorts for girls. You'll find some longer options.

Check target online. They have lots of longer options they probably don't carry in store.

Shorts - wtf!

I always buy my DD bermuda shorts because most of the shorts in the stores are too short.

Re: Shorts - wtf!

Look up children’s place toddler bike shorts. They are longer. My daughter had eczema on inner thighs last summer and these worked for her.

Thanks all.

Nell has a point about it might look different on girls vs adults.

But I think Im going to get her Umbro shorts from Target so they'll match my umbros lol

(I truly am stuck in the 90s, Umbro checkerboard shorts)

Funny I had the exact opposite experience today. I had to buy shorts for my almost nine year old and they all looked huge to me at target this afternoon. I ended up buying her a size 4/5 and I think even those will be a little big. They aren't particularly long but I never wore long shorts as a kid either.

Almost all of DD’s shorts are Bermuda’s. They look adorable.

As a PP mentioned, the children’s place bike shorts are also on the long side.

Shorts - wtf!

My older one (12) wears the shorter shorts. I just can't win that argument with her and as long as her butt isn't hanging out, I'm good. My younger one, 3rd Grade, is more modest and I just bought a bunch of bike shorts from Old Navy. Longer length and they weren't skin tight.

My dd has long legs, so I'm absolutely not ok with her in short shorts. I've always been able to find longer shorts for her at Kohls though that hit mid thigh. She mostly likes dresses anyway, and I have her wear shorts under them, but in that case I dont mind if they are short because they dont really get seen.

Shorts - wtf!

I think at age 5, they’re just short. They’re little little kids. My 4yo still lifts up her dress and thinks nothing of it.

Yeah, my DD is tall and even though the shorts look super tiny, they aren't bad on her. I've only had luck at Macy's finding bermuda shorts that aren't skin tight. Any bermuda shorts/bike shorts I've seen at Carter's or Kohl's or Old Navy are super tight like leggings and I generally only use them under dresses.

Yeah this is what I was trying to say.
I don't look at short shorts on a 5 year old and think they look the same as when I see them on a 13 year old, kwim?
Like I never look at a 5 year old and go- OMG look how scandalous those shorts are!!

Basically all DD's clothing comes from Hanna Andersson. They are more on the expensive side but the clothes are sized generously, wash beautifully, and do not shrink. She'll easily get 2 summers out of these bike shorts. They are bermuda length. Next year when she is taller, they will still have good coverage. Wait for sales and then stock up.
