Self Cleaning Oven

I have been in my house for 2 1/2 years and I am afraid to run the self cleaning oven! Do I do it when I am home or out? Will it cause a lot of fumes (I can open the sliding door if needed) or create a lot of heat? I am 6 1/2 months pregnant and have a 21 month old at home. I am afraid that we will get sick from the fumes Chat Icon
Someone please reassure me that I am just crazy and should just do it already! Chat Icon

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

There are no fumes, but it will smell like burning, so I would open the door and windows.

I would do it when you were home, I would never leave my oven on that high when I was out. Or if your really worried, go in your backyard or something.

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

Thank you! I think it takes 4 - 5 hours so maybe I will do it tonight after I put DS to bed. I don't want him downstairs near it since it will get so hot.

Yes, while your son is not around is good--it does geet very hot. For your being pregnant, it is probably safer than using oven cleaner, but it does smell like burning, and then you may need to wipe it down after. Not realy cleaning, but just to wipe up what it burned off. I miss my self-cleaning oven. Chat Icon

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

Mine does not give off any fumes at all - just smells like burning.

Also, my oven's manual says to take out the wire racks when cleaning the oven and to wash them separately. You may want to do that also. It said the high heat could discolor the chrome racks.

Good luck!!!

Thanks! I think I will run them through the dish washer.

I do use my oven quite frequently so I know the oven needs it. I have just been so scared to do it Chat Icon

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

My SC Oven does smell of fumes and I have to admit I have turned it on and left the houseChat Icon only because it takes sooooooooooo long and the fumes are strong. My oven came with a warning similiar to "take small animals out of the room while SC function is on as it may have consequences" or something to that effect so IMHO that means dont have your little one in there either.

I would be wary about being in there yourself because you are pregnant. Can you get anyone else to do it while you are out of the house for a half day?

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

Make sure that nothing is on top of the oven when it's in SC mode. No tea kettles or anything as the top of the oven will get very hot.

I run the self clean every 3 months or so. It does get smelly, but there really aren't any fumes. The smell lessens the more you use it. So it might stink at first if you've never done it. Definitley get some air venting.

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

if you can wait until the winter, i would wait. only b/c it throws off a lot of heat (450 degrees, i believe), and it will heat your house!
save it for winter or cool weather.

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

I have an electric stove and after a couple of times me of running the SC setting the burner just burned to a crisp. Good thing my DH was able to figure it out and replace the part for only $30. But now he says i can't do the self cleaning.

Re: Self Cleaning Oven

I wish I saw this thread last winter. I ran mine and the smell of the burning sent us out for a walk. Luckily it was not very cold. I was preggo and the smell from some butter that dripped to the bottom and was burning off was too much....even with the windows open....BUT IT WAS CLEAN!

Open all your windows and turn on your exhaust fan. There is a burning smell and maybe a bit of smoke which should go away within a day.
