We moved off of Long Island. My SIL and MIL constantly make comments as if the schools where we live now could never measure up to the schools on Long Island. So in my experience it is a type of brain washing that they are so close minded that no one can do it better than NY. I just smile and write out my $3,000 property tax bill every year for my brand new house. My kids will be just fine.

There is definitely a mentality of NY supremacy.
Not just for schools but for everything.
We pay insane taxes for horrible roads, sub par snow removal, terrible services and old, crumbling, ugly infrastructure. We pay millions of dollars for old, run down, tiny houses with lots the size of a postage stamp. And everyone chalks it up to-well it's NY. The beaches! The city! The schools!
Please.
Even the way we are being told to quarantine when we return from other states, when at certain points NY's Covid numbers were higher than anywhere else. If anything these other states should have been keeping US out.

But it's NY.
It's the best!

Honestly, it's getting old and that argument is starting to no longer hold any water.

I'm starting to miss the "bad" district I left for the "good district". The families are extremely unfriendly at the "good" district, there is zero diversity and the art and music programs are non-existent. The "bad" district had super friendly staff, more social and diverse families, an amazing art program. The only good thing about the good district is like extra school activities and field trips because the PTA can afford it (but all of that is shuttered because of COVID now anyway). I go back and forth about it. My DD was academically doing way better in the old/bad school then the new/good one -- but I think as the years go by, the high school will be better for her than the old one. We shall see.

We live in a decent district on LI, but I would say my daughter is getting an average education. She is smart, average of about 99% in 8th grade. But, a lot of things are lacking in Long Island Schools that I had growing up in Michigan, and that my nieces and nephews have there. People equate high property taxes to good schools, and it's more like high property taxes = highly paid teachers and admins.

"High" rated schools are overrated. In most areas, it just means parents have the resources to provide their children with opportunities outside of school (tutoring, vacations, etc).

A school is what you make of it.

If you can find someone you know who lives there and someone who works there, those are your ideal sources of information.

I worked at an average school and I would 100% send my kids there. The sense of community was phenomenal. Every single kid participated in school spirit days even at the secondary level. Teachers knew every kid even if they never had them. The special education department was phenomenal. They had amazing programs for at-risk students. I can not say enough good things about the school. The community there was just so amazing, warm, and inviting. I still see my old students at the store and they are excited to see me 10+ years later. They introduce me to their spouses and children.
