Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?

I read the school district's menu and was Chat Icon I'm sorry but to me mozzarella sticks is not a meal.

I've also been a teacher for many years and while the cafeteria food has gotten a lot better due to the work of Pres. Clinton, it's not what I want to put into their little bodies.

We talk about food and nutrition A LOT and they help me cook mostly from scratch.

I have to be out the door for work at 5:50 am but I'm committed to getting up earlier and packing lunches... by the New Year, I'm hoping they will be packing their own lunches.

My son is going to Kindergarten and I will be buying lunch. He used to eat the lunches at his daycare, so hopefully it will be the same.

My son is also a beast. LOL

same minus the beast

I never wanted her to be a picky eater so I feel they expose her to stuff. Besides, I survived it. And if I gave her the 'choice' she'd eat only one thing all the time. Cost factor for one child vs bringing her lunch also played a part. She gets choices in her lunch too.

So far the fruit / Veggie with every meal has really made her day!

school lunch - bring? or buy?

DD buys about 3 days a week varying on what the menu is. Always Friday though because it's pizza day!! She started buying half way through Kindergarten because she specifically asked too. I packed her lunch daily until then.

For Kindergarten, I am really of the mindset that the kids should bring for at least the first week. There is not much time to eat and the first week is very hectic. Figuring out what table to eat at, who they are eating next too, the excitement of eating in the "big" cafeteria, etc. and then adding purchasing a meal to the mix is just too much. After that though it's up to what your child likes.

Depends on the school district. In mine the majority buy and there are lots of options each day (hot food, sandwiches, kosher meals). We prepay for the year, the kids don't have to worry about the money. The decision of what to have is made in the kindergarten classroom with their teacher -- not standing on line in a hectic cafeteria. I'm grateful to have one fewer fight a day over what to pack. Talk to a mom who had already been in the school to find out what most kids do. Most of all, I'd want my kids to feel like they are having the same experience as their friends.

I've always been so grossed out by school lunches, since I was a kid, that I really don't want my DD eating them. It's really my own hang-up but nonetheless, I plan on making her lunches every day when she starts Kindergarten on Monday. She's so picky anyway, I feel better knowing she has a lunch she will actually eat over something she will just pick at and throw away.

My DD is going into 2nd. She wants to bring every day but Friday, for pizza. I'm not crazy about it, cause all she wants me to send for her is a jelly sandwich. I make her take a string cheese, or cut up cheese and a fruit or veg (cucumbers usually) as well. She said that when she buys, there just isn't enough time to eat.
