i heard this on npr, this morning... but i didn't catch all the details.

i did hear that he stayed outside for 4 minutes, while Cruz was inside killing children. it's supposedly caught on video. he resigned once this came to light.

i wonder if there will be charges against him... like if you're a dr and you see someone needs help and you don't help.

His gun is no match for what the kid had. I almost can't blame him for not engaging.

Yea, also don’t cops usually assess and wait for back up? I could be wrong so anyone jump in with their expertise.

I have no “expertise” with this, but I have read that there are are no stats to backing up the other side. The other side (schools in this exact case, being the fact) having a gun will protect you is a fallacy.

https://nypost.com/2018/02/23/four-sheriffs-deputies-hid-during-florida-school-shooting/

Not one but four sheriff’s deputies hid behind cars instead of storming Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, Fla., during Wednesday’s school shooting, police claimed Friday — as newly released records revealed the Broward County Sheriff’s Office had received at least 18 calls about the troubled teen over the past decade.

Sources from Coral Springs, Fla., Police Department tell CNN that when its officers arrived on the scene Wednesday, they were shocked to find three Broward County Sheriff’s deputies behind their cars with weapons drawn.
...

Apparently there were 4 "good guys with a gun" that did nothing.
And people expect teachers to stand up to someone with massive firepower?

Then what was the point of his job??? His job was to protect the kids and the school. IF that’s not what he planned on doing the one and only time he was needed he shouldn’t have taken the job. He wasn’t a teacher, or a parent or even a police officer that showed up at the scene. He was the guard for the school. It was HIS job to protect these kids- not hide behind a tree. IF he didn’t have the stomach for it he shouldn’t have taken the job. Maybe if someone else had the position half those kids would be alive.

I disagree with this. The shooter had an AR-15. I don’t think police officers even carry that— and surely not a security guard.

Arming the teachers, etc. is not going to solve the problem. There is a link to an article up above, but here’s a better one:

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/more-guns-do-not-stop-more-crimes-evidence-shows/

My only hope now is those kids are now starting to fight back. They are really putting pressure on lawmakers. Hopefully, this time it works.

No excuse for what he/they did. This is their job. This is what he gets paid over $100K a year for. To risk his life to protect others. He even knows he failed thats why he resigned.

I wonder why there was only ONE security guard. That campus is enormous.

Probably because the school was in area that was voted safest city in FL. False sense of security. Didn't think it would ever happen there.

Couldn't agree more. That's what he signed up for, sorry. If he didn't plan on being a hero then go work at Target.

I actually hope they're pressing charges against him.

Re: Reports there was an armed guard outside Florida HS who did nothing

This makes me so angry and so sad. Today I heard a report that not only did the guard not go in neither did 2 other cops who showed up initially up even after the shooter was gone. They could have gone and administered first aid to those who were shot. It makes me sick. I'm sure they will lose their jobs but that still won't make it right.

I rarely ever post anymore, but reading this makes me sick. I can almost guarantee that, god forbid it were any of us who had children shot in this school, that we would not be responding that we can't blame this guy....

I just cannot fathom dealing with this in the first place, but to then find that there could have been a chance that my child could have been saved Chat Icon

I agree with this, but I also agree that a hand gun is no match for an ar-15, but maybe if these types of weapons weren't in the hands of civilians in the first place ALL the kids would be alive.

I don't care if his handgun was no match for the AR-15. He could have at least tried. Even if he couldn't take the assshole out, just by shooting back that could have distracted him and lessened the amount of victims he claimed. This was his job. This was exactly what he signed up for and he failed miserably. Shame on him.

No I wouldn’t, i would be suffering from a trauma and most likely blaming everything including myself but it wouldn’t make it logical.

Obviously, it’s easier for us on the sidelines to look at the situation and judge because NONE of us lived it. Just like all the comments and ideas of having teachers carry weapons. To me that’s less logical than thinking one man with an inferior weapon could’ve went into the school and saved the day like Rambo.

ETA: if teachers start carrying weapons then it will be time for me to pull my kid out, move to a small town and homeschool him.

Again I don’t know the protocols of cops and when they should go in or wait for back up.. however, I feel like firemen travel to scenes with equipment and in a bigger group. Is it a fact that if a single fireman sees a building on fire and he is alone, he runs in the building to save the day with no equipment or team by his side?

Reports there was an armed guard outside Florida HS who did nothing

If this goes into practice, teachers allowing to carry in a school building, I will leave teaching forever.

Guns do not belong in the classrooms. Way too many "what ifs" way too many logistical problems, way too many teachers who may cause harm accidentally

They thought one of my kids had a gun last week. One of my favorite kids in fact. He didn't Thank God. But if he did, could I look at a kid I love and shoot? HELL NO! Yes, i know he would be causing harm but I couldn't look at a child and pull a trigger. No way.

The moment I have to carry a weapon to teach littles, is the moment I leave this profession forever.

Cops didn't want to engage with this shooter, but I should? No way!.

Exactly. If you wanted to carry a gun and possibly have to shoot someone you would have become a cop, not a teacher.

That is the most asinine thing I have ever heard in my life. I am not a teacher, but I have zero desire to ever touch or fire a gun (and I live with a gun in my home).

If they want to have guns in school for protection they need to have people who are trained and WANT to do it. Hire professional armed guards then. (which as we all saw in Florida, didn't even work anyway, but that's another issue.... )
