Really weird ring at my doorbell!! (NSAL related)
Let me just say I know I'm more paranoid than the norm .. I don't answer my door if I'm home by myself and not expecting anything/anyone. You hear too many stories out there........
Anyway.... I was upstairs when my doorbell rang this evening and of course I didn't answer it, but I did go to the window and saw a van outside. I can't see my front door from the window, but I saw them leave and walk back to their van in blue collared shirts. I actually thought they looked like the North Shore Animal League blue color, but I wasn't sure. Anyway the van didn't yet pull away when my phone rang. I had a feeling it was whoever was in the van calling ... and since I was supposedly "not home" I would have felt like an a$$ answering the phone at that point  (gotta keep the lies consistent  ) anyway........ they left a message and it really WAS NSAL!!! They were apparently from quality control and came to do an unannounced home inspection!! 
First of all .. I have 3 cats from there and this has NEVER happened before ....... but they are the most loved, best cared for cats I could ever imagine existing on this earth  They're like my kids...... spoiled as anything and have a very nice home. I have nothing to hide. I just find it VERY weird that they would just come unannounced and expect me to let them walk through my house  I understand what their point is and if they announced they were coming I could "set up" my house and it would defeat the purpose of them coming... but still, it just doesn't seem safe to me to just allow people to inspect my home randomly. I know had I answered the door, I would not have been comfortable with this.
Has this happened to anyone else? I figured I'd post here instead of Pets since it gets more traffic......

that happened to me with Clover... um, like 16 years ago maybe? She will be 18 in March and I want to say this happened when she was over a year old, or just around a year. I still remember it like it was yesterday even though i was only a kid! Simply because it was so strange!!!
p.s. i would have done the same thing with keeping the lies consistent LOL, i'm cracking up!!
eta they did not come in the house - they saw that she was sitting in the window, asked if that was her (must confirm her identity i guess? lol) and asked a few more questions and went on their way.

I had that when we adopted our dog from NSAL. They showed up one day unannounced to check up on us. We didn't let them in the house. Maybe because when we answered the door and they inquired we told them she was in the pool!
I get the whole point about advance notice. If they happen to come again when you are home maybe you can speak with them at the door and not let them in.

this happened to my friend.....months after she got her puppy there. the guy didnt go in her house though he just saw the puppy eating through the door and i guess that was enough

totally understand your being uncomfortable with them just showing up like that (because really, anyone could say they were from NSAL right?)

I actually left my house a little bit ago (after I made this post) and found a paper they left for me that says they need to make sure his shots are up to date and that he was neutered (as per the adoption agreement). I don't understand why they need my updated records because I got all his shorts done at THEIR vet, and got him neutered there recently as well!! I'll call tomorrow...
Thanks ladies, I'm glad I'm not the only one this has happened to!! It was my 3rd cat I've adopted there and this was the first time this has happened!!

My coworker actually just adopted a dog from NSAL a couple of months ago and last week they called her at work to tell her they had just dropped by and that she wasn't home. She explained to them that she was working and just rescheduled another day for them to come by and speak with her.
I totally don't blame you for not answering the door because I never answer my door either when I'm home alone.

This happened to a friend of mine once. In the 5 years since we have adopted our dog from there, no one has come by but I do remember it being mentioned on the adoption papers that they may do house visits to check on the animal.

It happened to me over 10 years ago when I adopted my first cat, Bailey, from them. They showed up unannounced about a month or two after I had adopted him to make sure he was okay. It was literally a two minute visit, the man was very nice and said that Bailey looked very happy and well taken care of.

That's so odd!! I've never heard of this but I actually like the idea. Not sure if I would let them in my home if I was alone or if it was unannounced but glad to hear they are checking up on these pets.

Last winter DH was home and someone from National Grid came to check the meter (it's in the basement) and the guy kept showing DH his ID card and papers and I guess DH was relaxed about it, and the guy was like no you need to look!
Apparently there had been some home invaders pretending to be Nat Grid and robbing people!
So it is definitely always better to be safe than sorry especially being a woman home alone (at least that's how I feel).
BUT I like that NSAL does check up on their pets to make sure they are being properly cared for.

This happened to us years ago,(18 yrs ago) my Mom had a visiting nurse she was just out of the hospital , and they knocked on the door. We had nothing to hide with the cat we adopted, we spoil our animals- we thought it was strange too. They saw the cat in the window and it was good enough for them. You can never be too cautious w/ the people who knock on the door.

They came to my house about 6 or 7 months after I adopted my dog. I was surprised, but I think it's actually nice that they do care enough about the animals they adopt out to check on their well being when they leave.
They didn't ask to see any vet information or anything, but like you I had brought her there for follow up care in the beginning. Just came in and played with her for a few minutes and checked my yard for a fence.

The rescue I adopted my cats from said they might do that- but they never did.
I think they may do it at random
It's a great policy though!
But like you- I don''t answer my doors to unexpected strangers.

I like the idea that they check BUT I'm with you, I don't open the door to unexpected people either. If DH is home I might but otherwise no.

Yupp, this happened to us as well. Scared the pants off me! Once with our cat Daisy that we adopted and once with out pup Irwin. It wasn't very thorough but it was still nice to think that they do take the time/effort to check in.
