Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
We were at a party over the weekend and a 15 year old was drinking O'Douls with the permission of her parents. I know it's technically non-alcoholic but I felt like it was encouraging a young person to acquire a taste for beer. But then I was thinking about the times that I had virgin coladas and daquiris when I was younger, so what's the difference? They don't need an acquired taste because it's essentially a fruit smoothie?
I realize teens are drinking far worse than O'Douls but it just weirded me out a little to watch her drink that. What do you think? Would you allow your underage teen to have O'Douls in a social setting?

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
the only reason i would think it was strange is because... well whats the point, even tho there is .05% alcohol in o'douls, its not going to get anyone drunk... i personally dont drink beer for the taste...
ETA: i wouldnt let my 15 year old drink in front of me... maybe a sip or something...

I wouldn't. If they want the bottle experience, most soft drinks come in a glass bottle.
I think that's really pushing it.

I think this is completely inappropriate. Kids (anyone under 21) should be drinking soda or water in a social situation. Not to mention the trace amounts of alcohol in O'Douls.

Nope. Not gonna happen. Drinking alcohol is a privilege, not a right, and at 15 my son *might* enjoy a watered-down glass of wine on a holiday, but he will NOT be swigging a "fake' brewski (and as pp pointed out it does contain alcohol). This poor kid will realize early on that I have no desire to be the "cool mom".

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
ive been drinking real beers with my father since i was around 12..... not getting DRUNK .. but i would have a beer if we were working on the house... or having a party etc.... dont think its a big deal at all..
the thought in my family was the more exposure you have to something... they less curious you are.... so by LETTING me drink in a controlled environment, i was never curious to go get drunk on the corner...

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
Eh, I wouldn't do it and my parents were pretty lax. When I was 18, I was allowed to have a wine cooler at family parties. I see how it could encourage kids, but I don't think it's a huge issue either.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
I am not a fan. I once posted on here about a very young girl drinking soda out of a beer bottle.
This, to me, is very different than having wine with dinner. Is it a double standard? Absolutely. But that is how I feel about it.
Hanging out and drinking to me is not something I want to encourage. Having a small TINY glass of wine with a meal, with your family - is not about getting drunk, it is about celebrating our culture and food.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
It could be alot worse...there are many parents out there that let thier children drink alcoholic beverages. If she was drinking it and enjoying the taste...she probably has drank beer before and already has the acquired taste for it.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
Yeah that's just odd. My parents used to let my cousins and I drink a wine cooler at family bbq's when we were like 17 or 18. Just one. And only while they were at the party with us.
I don't know- O'Doul's. It's kind of odd. Beer doesn't really taste good unless you have acquired the taste for it, kwim?
ETA- in terms of the small amount of alcohol that's in it, that's not even somethign I would consider...I drank O'Douls the whole time I was pregnant. The amount is so miniscule I doubt it would affect even a teenager...unless you drank like 12 of them!

That's a bit odd especially since beer is an acquired taste. Daquaris and pina coladas taste yummy to begin with.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
I don't know...I was allowed to drink wine coolers at family functions when I was younger than that...however, I certainly did quite a lot of drinking in my teen years. Did that encourage me to drink? No, I would've drank anyway.
Would I let my own kids do it? I'm not sure...especially since O'Douls does technically have a small bit of alcohol in it.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
I cannot imagine a "good" reason why a minor would need to be drinking non-alcoholic beer. I really cannot. So I would not allow it if it were up to me.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
nope sorry wouldn't allow it even with it being non-alcoholic. DH's family allowed underage drinking (still does) and I honestly think its not appropriate.
Now I drank underage but not in front of my parents and if my parents saw me drinking i was punished because it was against the law.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
Why does a minor need to have a "bottle experience"? Give him a water bottle if drinking from a bottle is so intruiging.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
I'm in the minority but I see nothing wrong with it, especially if the child is around a ton of adults. I was allowed wine occassionaly at about 16 on. My parent's figure me having a little alchol wouldn't make me curious and have me then sneak to have it. I still agree with the concept.

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
i would have to think 'whats the point?'
i mean, what kid really and truly enjoys the taste of beer? So what would the reasoning be behind him drinking an Odouls other than to "prepare" him for the real thing?
eh.. i'm torn. I guess i don't see an issue with it if its at a family function and he's being watched. But on the other hand, i think its weird. Either give him a beer, or don't. Don't give him a fake one

Re: Thoughts on this? Minors drinking O'Douls?
I find it bizarre, why would a teenager like the taste of an O'Doul's
I agree that it is like getting them to acquire the taste or something. NOT the same as a Virgin Fruit cocktail--which is JUICE.
I find it wierd.
