Honestly, a lot of smart, well educated, successful people DON'T realize what is involved until it's literally thrown in their face. - I am one of those people.

Maybe it was stupid of me, but I didn't realize sheepskin anything was literally sheep SKIN ......like, they savagely rip their skin off while the poor animals are still alive. WHAT is the purpose of that?
I honestly thought it was just their wool ......like a sweater or anything else that is shaved - I didn't know the outer part of the boot was actually the sheep's SKIN

I've owned several pairs of UGGs, - I won't toss mine out and refus to ever wear them again - but I won't purchase anything sheepskin related again b/c I will not be able to get that visual out of my head.

Same here. I didn't realize it either. Honestly, I had no idea what UGGs were made out of. I started wearing them in freshmen year or college or whatever when they became popular and continued to do so.

Now that I know where they are coming from, I won't buy anymore. The one pair I have is pretty banged up, so I doubt I'll be wearing them either.

I do eat meat, and I realize some people view that as a contradiction. However, I feel like garbage when I don't eat meat; I'll live if I don't wear sheepskin.

Re: The Ugg Controversy

I heard that the sheep are used for the boots AND meat.

I don't know anything about slaughterhouse practices but I think that what has everyone up in arms is because the sheep are killed "inhumanely". I cant imagine any animals killed in a slaughterhouse are put to sleep before they are killed.

I eat meat, I wear Uggs.

I feel guilty here and there but reality quickly takes over in my brain.

Where did you hear that they skin the animal alive? I don't think this is true. I'm pretty sure they use slaughtered sheep that are used for meat.

Re: The Ugg Controversy

I see it as a by product to the meat industry. I eat meat (not lamb or mutton because I don't like it), so I can't really comment on saying it's inhumane because that would just be hypocritical of me. I can say if the animal is killed for human use, I think all parts of the animal should be used. Don't waste it. I'm going to leave the vegetarian issue out of this, and just leave it at Uggs.

I'm not sure about the skinning alive part, but I did read it somewhere, not sure where. I'm not sure if it's even true. But as far as I know, Ugg is an American brand and they purchase the hide from China, not from Australia. They don't even sell Ugg brand in Australia anymore! If China is doing this to their animals, then I also think that's an issue.

I'm not throwing mine out. Like someone said, it won't bring the animal back. I don't have plans to buy any in the future because I don't need any.

How is this a new controversy? It's always been sheepskin no? Seriously - was there a recent article about it? I'm just confused. Googled it and nothing new came up.

Re: The Ugg Controversy

I knew about this for years. I was vegan for 15 yrs, wore fake leather shoes, etc.... Ate no animal products at all. Not even honey!!!

Now I'm vegetarian. Eat local eggs, and dairy... And I wear leather!!!! So bad, I know.... But I love my leather boots Chat Icon

I have a pair of knit uggs, but refuse to wear the leather ones. Partly because of the way they're made. Mostly because they're ugly and not worth it.

Re: The Ugg Controversy

Consider me one of those who didn't realize where they came from either. Chat Icon

With that said I just ordered a new pair before the FB stuff was posted.

I still love them and will continue to wear them.

Now I'm just worried about some nut physically coming after me over this now.

Re: The Ugg Controversy

I hate them. I never wore them before but, the controversy isn't the reason. I just think they are ugly.
