I actually thought when I opened it, " these legs are very long, looks like she could gag herself."

She wasn't that into sophie...not even sure were sophie has gone.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

I think the recall in Canada was overreacting personally. I do agree though that Sophie's long legs can pose a choking hazard which is why DD never plays with her unsupervised.

There is a Mushroom like toy by Vulli at BBB that looks a lot safer IMO and it is 5 dollars cheaper just in case anyone wants something similar.

I agree. There is also a smaller looking Sophie with a bigger head I saw. That might be an option for moms who don't want to give their baby sophie.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

I dont think the recall is wrong at all. I think Canada and other countries do a lot more for their children then the US does..PERIOD.

I think its crazy to think we have to supervise our babies with teething toys...

We have sophie and we will keep it, but DD's are almost a yr old , so I dont feel worried anymore, but I think a choking hazard label should be put on it.

i couldn't agree more. when people started 'overreacting' to their children choking, canada pulled it off toys r us shelves.

i know we can't say the same for the 'overreacting' of diaper rashes from pampers with drymax that happened here in the US.

Danica, I want to be clear that I do not think you or any other parent that had this happen to their child are over reacting. Not even in the slightest. And I am so thankful that you are spreading the word.

I think a total ban of Sophie is overacting. I do feel there needs to be a warning on the label, because something like this would never cross my mind. And perhaps Sophie should not be marketed as a teether.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

Canada pulled the shelves in 2008 while they performed independent safety tests and foudn it to not pose a serious threat, and they returned it to the shelves in March of 2009.

Not that I think that makes the toy safe or your concerns less valid. it must have been so scary and you are apparently not the first this has happened to which should definitely make people take pause, but I just wanted to share all the information on the canadian recall.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

katie, no offense taken here. you have expressed your concern, and i greatly appreciate it.

i don't think a ban is necessary either, but i think something should be done other than me spreading the word. i don't believe any baby has died from choking on sophie but it could have been my baby if i wasn't there.

sophie's legs need to be shorter and her feet not as wide, and i will make sure the company knows it. sophie's feet can plug up and block a baby or toddlers airway. easily.

she was supervised, i was sitting right next to her. it took half a second for her to shove it down her own throat.

i also don't think anything that poses a choking hazard with potentially deadly affects can't be considered overreacting.

I think if this is an ongoing problem. . .then the company should re-design sophie. end of story.

I didn't mean you personally were overreacting FTR. I hope you didn't think that. I meant telling everyone that they can't have Sophie is overreacting. My DD squeaks and hurls it across the room so I don't have an issue with it. I recommended the Mushroom because it looked safer.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

was going to visit my cousin and her baby with DS and was going to get her a sophie. I asked if she had one and she had said No that she heard they were recalled. I didnt get it for her or DS, but didnt think much of it because I hadnt seen it posted on here. This was about a month ago.

It is wierd that they wouldnt recall it here.

I'm very sorry that this happened. DD loved this toy and did chew on the legs but I never let her stick it too far in and she preferred to chew on the head so it was never an issue for us. Did the leg come off or did she just stick it too far in?

Unfortunately for us it was the only teether that DD would take to - and we tried several.

It actually isn't recalled in Canada anymore - I think they started selling it again back in 2009.

Look how long it took to get the word out about the Simiac recall! The US is quite behind in these things.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

DS had a sophie and the first thing my mom said when she saw it was "he could choke on her legs! only let him chew on her head". which is what we did. he eventually became bored with her and doesnt play with her at all anymore. but this was ALWAYS a concern in the back of my mind when he was chewing on her.
