If you read some reviews on Sophie this HAS HAPPENED TO PARENTS IN THE PAST...the first time I gave her to Lara I was petrified now that she is a little older I am less anxious about her chewing on her.

Yup- I was gonna say the same thing.

Very scary, and definitely a good reminder never to leave your kids unsupervised with toys - it's great that you were right there next to her Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

My DD loves her Sophie, I always watch her with it because I always thought about the legs being too long also. I will always supervise her with it, My DD loves sticking things down her throat so I watch her with everything..lol..Even her own hands..She sticks them so far in her mouth and chokes..Thank you for posting this info.Chat Icon

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

This freaks me out b/c DS actually manages to gag himself accidentally on his FINGERS...I cant imagine what would happen if I gave him sophie! Kinda stinks though b/c I think he would like it, but now I am too nervous to get one for him.

I can't believe it wasn't recalled everywhere if there are concerns about its safety! Mine is still in the box, and it is definitely going back...

ETA: click to learn more, it was recalled

i did a quick search and learned that sophie was pulled from the shelves of TOYS R US in canada for the exact reason. now i'm FUMING wondering why it wasn't a COMPANY recall.

I think to recall it is an overreaction, kids should be supervised when using any toy, IMO.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

So scary! I usually give Sophie to Evan in the car, but I will not be doing that anymore. It never occurred to me that the legs could get caught in his throat, although he does not ever chew on Sophie, he just likes making her squeak.

Thank you for posting this. I will make sure he is supervised with Sophie.

Re: sophie the giraffe scare - update with info on being pulled from shelves

i read your post last night, and then google sophie becauase I had no idea what this toy was (I'm due any day, first baby lol). I was shocked to read how many instances of chocking there was, and how it was pulled in canada, and if it weren't for your post, I would never know!!! Thank God for boards like this where we can all share past experiences and learn from each other. One thing it has taught me is to investigate toys before giving them to my child! So happy that you were there to witness this happen, it could have been so much worse!
