Re: If you don't get a permit

I fully understand idea of permits, and standards as well as safety they should provide, I do not, for example, understand why you need to redo all of your electricity and plumbing up to current standards when you decide to change sheetrock, because, for example, it got wet. Anyway, that is a separate discussion.

Regarding internal modifications - what does a town know about your house? Do they have drawings etc? When you try to sell, do they come with drawings and compare? What happens if you move a wall by two feet? Will they find out?

We walked away from 2 houses we had deals on because they didn't have permits and we would not be able to get our FHA loan without the proper permits, and the sellers were told it would take up to 6 months if not more to get them. Also, in both instances they found out during this that they were not up to code, or were a few feet off what was 'legal'. It was a HUGE hassle. As someone who went through it from the buyer's side - please get permits! It was 100% a dealbreaker for us and made life so complicated.

Agreed 100%! We walked away from a house that we had put an offer on due to lack of permits and the lengthy time it would take to get them (even with an expeditor which the sellers were going to pay for). We also were doing an FHA loan.

I'm not concerned about selling the house... I am sure an above ground pool wont last as long as I plan to stay here Chat Icon
