How early is too early to decorate for Halloween?

DH and I have a big fall "barbecue" (I say "barbecue" b/c it's outside but we don't actually barbecue anything...we just serve a bunch of fall foods) the last Saturday in September (the 29th this year). I think I'd like to try to get my Halloween decorations up before then to add to the atmosphere. Do you think that's too early? Would you be confused if you went to a "fall bbq" and there were Halloween decorations out?

Well considering I see more and more people putting up their Christmas lights and their tree the weekend of Veteran's Day lately it definitely is anything goes!

Personally I wouldn't decorate for Halloween before the 1st of Oct- but this is only a few days before that and it's for a party, so I say why not?

Considering the fact that stores are already selling halloween candy and decorations I don't think anyone would bat an eyelash at you for having decorations up the last weekend of Sept.

I think it would be ok. I usually decorate for halloween on oct 1st but a few days before that wont make a difference!

i have to say, i think it's a bit early..i really wouldn't decorate before the 1st of october...

I normally decorate after the 1st for Halloween, but since you are having a party I would decorate a little early. But do more "fall" decorations and put up the actual Halloween stuff later

Fall starts the week before your party. It's no longer summer and Halloween is the first holiday in fall so I think it's just fine to decorate.

I put no.. but really I decorate for fall and not so much halloween.

Then closer to halloween I will put a few more halloween type decorations out.

Your party is closer to summer than Halloween so I say WAY too early.

I think you can put some FALL decorations up but don't have to include the Halloween stuff for the party. So, fall colors, leaves, other themes, but not the spiders, ghosts, etc. KWIM?

I would say September 20th would be my cutoff for early. I decorate for Christmas on Thanksgiving, so I'm partial to decorations going up early. I tend to decorate for Halloween at the end of September regardless if I'm having a party or not.

no way! we start decorating after Labor day

ETA - i mean we decorate for fall after labor day! We bring out the Halloween stuff last weekend of Sept.

30 days prior isn't too early in my mind. Besides, I'll probably start on my stuff when I get back from NY so the first week of Sept, put the stuff together etc, then by the 3rd week start slowly putting it outside. I always save a few things for the week of. This year I hope to use the front room as a display and put up a zombie family.

Under normal circumstance I'd say it's a tad bit early but not ridiculous or anything. Especially since you want to do it for your party I say go for it. Many people are saying Oct 1st and you're only a few days ahead of that.

i would decorate at the end of sept. i feel like sometimes i work so hard decorating and bc i do it so close to the holiday sometimes--i can't enjoy it! i feel like it's up then quickly down! but, when i do do it the right way--i like to do it about a month before to enjoy it! go for it!

I think it's early for Halloween decor, but as a PP mentioned, fall decor would be nice.

I agree. I hate that stores now start putting things out so early for holidays that are months away. I think each holiday has it's time/month even if retailers try to push us into thinking otherwise.

this actually happens to be one of my BIGGEST pet peeves and ruins a lot of holidays for me.
I was in Stop n Shop around the 15th of July and they had the freakin' FALL crap out.
