Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift
I give anywhere from 250 - 500. More for close friends and family. Not that I don't love all my friends but money is tight these days.

Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift
we just got married 6 months ago-gifts from friends ranged from a $40 registry gift for a couple who came, to i believe about 400 for an individual friend of ours who came alone

Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift
You might check to see if money is appropriate, because in some areas and in some circles it is not. No one I know does it. Instead, a gift is usually sent ahead of time and it doesn't have to be lavish. Guests are not expected to offset the cost of the wedding. The family pays for everything.

Unfortunately it seems for a majority in the tri-state area money is appropriate and expected.
ETA: OP give what you can. If you are not strapped for cash I would say $150-200 is more than generous.

Re: Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift
The last few years, we have always given $300. When we got married, $300 was the typical amount we received from couples.

Re: Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift
I got married in August 2011. I feel that the average gift for an adult couple not very close to us was 250-300. Which I feel was generous.
I also dont worry about covering your plate. Personally I felt that i wanted a wedding, i invited who i wanted to share in my day, and if i could afford it i could have it. I was not banking on people to cover their plate. Some people just cant afford it and i would much rather them be there than for them not to come because they feel they cant give enough.

Not being snarky, I just have to ask, you live in NY and you don't know anyone who gives cash for a wedding??
Maybe in the Deep South or Midwest do people give registry gifts for a wedding, but that is certainly not the norm here.

Re: Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift
What about if its a friend my husband plays golf with. I never met the daughter and were not going to the wedding?

I honestly wouldn't give a gift.

Re: Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift
Usually $250-$300
I don't believe in covering the plate. I have 2 weddings coming up this summer one is in their backyard and one is at a very expensive hall they both will receive the same gift from me.
