Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift

A daughter of our college friends is getting married.

What is an appropriate amount (cash) to give these days?

TIA

This answer should be pinned. Chat Icon

I'm in camp whatever you can afford & feel comfortable with giving, regardless of where it's held or what they gave you.

You forgot a nice bowl, vase or a place setting ... Or is that only for weddings outside of the tri state area?

Give what you can AFFORD. I don't agree with that cover the plate crap. It's a wedding, not a fundraiser :)

Re: Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift

Just to give a ballpark figure, I'd guess that the average amount a couple gives for a wedding these days is $250.

Re: Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift

I give $200-500 depending on whether I go solo or if DH and I go as a couple. It also depends on how well I know the couple and where the venue is. I am very generous with bridal shower gifts if the friend is a good friend.

DH is more about reciprocity. DH had a friend who gave us $75 as a wedding gift. When DH went to his wedding, he gave $100 despite my strong urging to give more.

We used to argue about this. Thank goodness most of our friends are now married.

Re: Appropriate Amount for Wedding Gift

Last 2 weddings we attended in the past year, we both gave the couple $200-250 (can't recall exactly). I asked my friends this question and this was the general response.

My own wedding, the average cash gift was $200 with a few relatives gifting us $300-500. If I am not that close to the bride/groom, I am usually inclined to give less.

I would give $200 or $250 bc the person is distant. For my friends and family I usually give $350-$400.

for our wedding, the majority of DH's coworkers, or people that were not close family gave $200. But do what you can afford
