Random question - Why do people pay extra to get the new gold NY plates?
I just received my registration renewal in the mail and there are 3 prices listed. Renewing as is is the cheapest ($120). But if I wanted the new gold plates I'd have to pay an extra $45.50 for a total $165.50!
I see so many gold plates out there now, I'm just wondering why someone would choose to pay extra to have it.

New cars get new plates most of the time.
Some people like the new plates.
Some people want them because they are "new".
Old car was in an accident, and plates were damaged beyond reuse.

I dont know why they would charge them to get the new plates... everyone is going to have to change over at some point... when i got my car last May, i was forced to get the new plates because i had to renew my plates at the time

Yeah I got the gold plates when I renewed and I don't believe that I had to pay extra

Not to mention that they are FUGLY, IMO
ETA: Not sure when/if everyone will be required to get the new plates but I just renewed my registration and kept my old plates which will be good until 2013.

I don't understand why, given a choice, people would pay extra for the new plates. According to DMV, you are not required to get the new plates.
DMV - plates
The reason the cost is higher for the new plates is due to the fact that they are issuing a new set of plates. If you keep your old ones, they don't have to send you a new set.
When I renewed last year, I made sure that they weren't going to eventually require the gold plates before I decided to keep my old ones.

My DH likes them.  I told him I thought it was ridiculous to spend money on them. He eventually saw things my way and kept the blue/white plates.

Honestly, I thought both plates were so ugly so I bought custom plates. I always wanted them as a kid LOL so now I have them.

My car is White, and it doesnt look horrible... but i still like my old plates better... i had them for 10 years now i had to learn a whole new plate # lol

I believe it was required at one point that you had to get the new plates when you renewed your registration or bought a new vehicle. They've seen changed that and you are allowed to keep your old plates.

I think at one point it was going around that everyone was going to be required to get them, so people did since they figured they would eventually have to anyway. However, I'm pretty sure that's no longer true (if it ever even was true, I'm not sure).

unless your car is white or that same nasty shade of blue that's on the plates, these plates look awful. to make matters worse, NY requires plates on both front and back of the car

DH and I both got new cars in the last two months...
DH wasn't given a choice as to whether he got the new plates or not... because his current registration was up with in the year, they automatically gave hime the new, ugly ones.
I was allowed to keep my plates, but I wonder if that was because mine are vanity plates... i wasn't giving them up for anything!

Yeah why is that? I couldn't believe when I saw the prices!! I like the plates I have right now..they are bent a little in the front but those yellow license plates are U-G-L-Y!!!!!!! Now, if they change the license plates to the World Trade Center ( 9-11) I would def make the switch! That's worth it!!!!!

you can get the new plates (for $25) and also keep the same vanity (add $20)

i *think* when dh & i each got registration renewals in the mail it was one price to get the new gold plates w/a new license plate # issued to you (i believe this was the cheapest option), one price to keep your old plates, and one price to get the new gold plates with your exsisting license plate #. while you did have to pay to get the new gold plates, it wasn't as if you were paying FOR the gold plates - you were paying to renew your registration, which you would have to do regardless. but then depending on which option you picked, it could be more expensive.

I always wondered as well. DH asked if I wanted to pay more for the new plates and I said no. There are a lot of the new plates out there and most of what I see is not new cars. I too as to why you would pay for the ugly plates.

I don't get it either - I hate the new ones.
A coworker got them - I couldn't believe she paid extra for them but she said they reminded her of the old NY plates and it was a nostalgia thing. I remember the old plates - I hated them then to!!
