Quarantine and waiting for test results?

I totally understand not quarantining if you have to test on a regular basis for your job. But if you are testing for travel or surgery, isn't the point of the test to indicate you are not covid positive when you get on a plane or have the surgery? (or to not spread it if you came back from somewhere else). In those cases, even if yo haven't been exposed, I think it makes sense to quarantine so that you do not get exposed in the time between the test and the travel or surgery

Our policy is yes, if you're tested for any reason you cannot return to work until you have results. This was reinforced after someone who got a routine test while not feeling ill came back positive and caused everyone they interacted with to quarantine.

Didn't think of it that way but you make a great point.

You could make the same argument though for a hairstylist. The point of getting tested is so they are not positive while they are touching clients...

No - the only time you should quarantine is if you have symptoms or exposure. May jobs require routine testing - should those people be required to test every time. It would be ridiculous to expect people with no exposure and no symptoms to quarantine. I don't understand at all why anyone would think otherwise.

Okay I wrote my post but you have changed my mind. In this case I agree now.

ETA so they should actually change the requirements. Negative test and quarantine from time of test until departure/surgery.

Completely agree. If you don't quarantine after the test, by the time you get the results, you have no promise that they are accurate. For travel or surgery, that is the reason the test is required.

If you're testing weekly for work as part of an asymptomatic testing protocol intended to find cases and limit spread, it's unreasonable to expect quarantine. But for travel or surgery, you absolutely should. Honestly, it still won't catch everything unless you also quarantine for 7+ days before the test, as your viral load might not be high enough to show on the test yet. But it will still help find some cases. That's why even with testing before travel, things are still spreading - you would need to quarantine really for 7-10 days, test, stay quarantined until you get your results, and then go wherever you're going to be really sure you are in the clear. Unfortunately that's not realistic for most people to do.

Just get the rapid and you have results in one hour

Most travel and medical will NOT accept the rapid test results. Must be PCR. Rapid test is too inaccurate.

Yeah, please don't do this. When I was in the hospital they told me Rapid is wrong almost half the time and to not bother with a rapid test.

I still stand by my stance that the rapid should be done away with.
What is the point of such an inaccurate test?
It does more harm than good...so many people get negatives on it- feel like ok I'm good- go about their lives, only to find out it was wrong and the PCR is positive.

ITA with you. Though I have been told that my anecdotal evidence means nothing, we have had quite a few people at work negative on rapid, come in and then positive from PCR. I can understand that they use rapid on people who get tested daily, such as a physical therapist I know in a rehab. They are just hoping to at least catch as many positives as fast as possible. But they also do PCR test twice a week. But in most situations, definitely no be used.

Re: Quarantine and waiting for test results?

I didn't read every response but I had surgery on a Tuesday in October and they scheduled my testing for the Friday before.

They didn't tell me to quarantine which I thought was strange. I had 4 days to catch it in between.

I wasn't going very far anyway because I did not want to catch Covid and have the surgery postponed.

I could see a day or two before but I had a whole weekend to go galivanting in between lol.

I chalked it up to it not being a perfect system and they cannot necessarily schedule everyone for the exact moment they have to go.
