Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

Right now we are remote. Thank goodness my kids are doing well. They are in 6th and 4th grades.
For some reason this town I live in acts like we are the only town remote so contacted ABC and the story was on the 5PM news the other night Chat Icon

Seriously?!

I just want to see what other people are who are in public school doing. I get it's not the best, and I'd love for life to be back to normal.

We are planning to open hybrid next week, but also have the choice to stay remote so DH and I are discussing what to do.

I am lucky to work from home, but DH owns his own business and has to do construction. He's also the main income so if he gets sick or even exposed he doesn't work for 2 weeks. There's no pay or sick for him and then his work gets backed up.

Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

My home district is K-5 - Full time in person; 6-12: Hybird

My work district is K-5 - Full time in person; 6-12: Hybrid, but more and more students are requesting 4 days in person and are being granted access. If a class doesn't have enough room for them, they go to an overflow room where they live stream the lesson.

The three elementary schools are opened full time in person. Middle and high school are hybrid. You do have the option of full remote at all grade levels

ETA: my daughter is elementary and goes in person full time

Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

5th and 3rd - we've been hybrid since September but full remote from Thanksgiving until the week after New Years.

My 5th grader has been in person 21 days for the first half of the school year (it ends Fri but today is his last in person day). He has not missed a single in person day that he was scheduled for (no quarantines yet) and it's only 21 days. My 3rd grader has been in 23 days (we took him out one day to go to Hershey park and last week we were requested to keep him home since they would otherwise have to find a sub for 3 kids).

I think now that they are adjusting the tests to be less sensitive, there will be fewer quarantines.

We are STILL on a hybrid model, I HATE it as do my kids. They have very limited in-person days and when they do it's NOT a full day of school. I am so fed up with this school year already, I am ready for September. Maybe by then things will be more normal. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

Elementary (K-5) full time in person since Sept

Middle and High School are still hybrid I think they go every other day. If you last name is A-L you go in person these days, if you last name is M-Z you go in person the other days
.
I would never in 1000 years chose remote for my child. The difference in her both academically and mentally are night and day from when we were forced remote in the spring.

Elementary is open full time- had been since October.
Middle school and HS are every other day. They were originally a ABCD schedule so essentially once a week. We went to AB model in November.

We were a hybrid model. As of yesterday K-6 went back 4 days a week. Starting next week, they are slowly integrating the grades back 4 days a week.

I don't know why they are acting like that, but NYC all JHS and HS are remote still.

K to 5 is full-time. Grades 6 to 12 are hybrid. But, they're trying to slowly get them back full time. They're doing two grades at a time. By the time everyone is in school full time, it will be March -- one year since this all started!

ETA -- If a family wants 100% remote, that is permitted in all grades.

Re: Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

I haven’t been following high school or middle school but i think they are still hybrid at first they were only in one day a week not sure if that has changed to more days or full time?!

Elementary is full time in school but you are allowed to be 100% remote and you can remote or go in whenever you want.

My DS class is quarantined again (personally I find it ridiculous they quarantine the whole class when there’s one positive when they have to wear masks and have those stupid plastic barriers the whole day. They only time they take it off is to eat) so I decided to keep DD home cause I am lazy and didn’t want to have to deal with dropping her off and rushing home to log in on time

DS is in 5th and goes full time (last year of elementary.)

Middle and high school are both hybrid but not sure of the exact pattern.

Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

Pre-K through 12th are in school every day since the beginning of September. There is a remote option for those who did not want their children in school.

Yeah in our district if there is a positive case in the class, they only make the ones who sit immediately around them quarantine, not the whole class

Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

I have 2 school aged grandkids. The one on LI is full time in person for elementary school (middle and high school in the district is hybrid.) The one who lives in Virginia has been fully remote all year. They were supposed to be hybrid come January but that didn’t happen.

Re: Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

We are in NJ too. We have multiple options. Kids that have IEP and 504 plans are in person five days a week. Kindergarten, 1, and 2 and full day until 1 pm five days a week. They also have 100% virtual should a parent choose that. Grades 3-12 have A day and B day schedules. If you are A day, you are in person Monday and Tuesday. You are virtual Wednesday to Friday. If you are B day. You are virtual Monday to Wednesday and in person Thursday and Friday. There is also the 100% virtual option for grades 3-12. For the middle and high school grades 6 to 12 only Wednesday is a full day with 9 classes including lunch. On Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday the kids have classes that meet for an hour and so you only have half of your classes. The day ends at 12:45. Every teacher has office hours from 1-3 where you can meet with your teacher either individually or in small groups to review materials or make presentations. Band, chorus, and orchestra all meet from 1-3 where each child schedules weekly individual zoom meetings with the teacher to show they are practicing. Sometimes two or three kids may meet with a band teacher to play together over zoom.

There are still parents that are freaking out here with what we have and are insisting they need their kid in school five full days a week and this is not enough for them.

Public schools - remote, hybrid or full?

In the NYC DOE middle and high school school students have been remote since mid November and at this point I doubt that they will return to in person before September. They also close entire elementary schools for 10 days if there in more than one case. Parents outside of the city should be extremely grateful they are not dealing with that.

Which is how it should be. I have questioned the superintendent several times on it. I think I’m going to write again and add the school board also to the email.

The class just got out of the 10 day quarantine (due to my son being positive) on the 17th and now the whole class is back in quarantine starting on Saturday till the 29th. Which is unfair to all those kids to now have to sit for all those days again. My son has nowhere to really be but I’m not following the 10 days. We all just had covid no reason for him have to quarantine and stay in. if I ever get a call from the health department I will confirm he doesn’t have too but on the cdc site it says you don’t have too quarantine for 90 days after getting a positive.

I don't disagree with them. All that stuff over zoom is great and all, but it is not the same as being in school daily on a normal routine and schedule with a teacher all day.
Kids sitting in a house on a screen all day is not ideal whatsoever regardless of what they do.
Not to mention full time working parents.....

All students, district wide, in school full time. Parents did have the opportunity to chose to keep their child on remote learning model if they were more comfortable doing so

Well, yeah. That schedule sucks.

We're hybrid for elementary school. DD goes 2.5 hours a day. The district is now saying they might not go back to full in person until 2023.
