We personally are not sending our kids to Pre-K as of right now. For one, the pre-k program through our school the kids have to be 3 by December 1st. They miss it by a day. We also can not do the pick up and drop off around our work schedules. They are currently in an in home daycare that is run by a family friend and we are paying a lot less than what a regular daycare would cost. We've checked out some pre schools in a daycare setting and it is just way too expensive, we can't afford it. We have plans of moving to NC early next year, and I will be a SAHM, so i will re-visit the preschool thing then. Maybe sending them 2 days a week but for now, they will remain where they are. Do i wish i could send my kids to pre school? Yes! They are way too smart and need more of a challenge than what they are getting now. Do i think it's absolutely necessary to send my kids to pre school? No. As previous posters have said, as long as they are enrolled in things and we as their parents are very involved, i think they will be just fine.

But in your case your child has 2 more years until k. In the case it is only 1

Ask your ped. There is a difference between a kid getting sick at 4 vs 5 and 5 vs 6.

Lungs don't fully develop until 8 years old.

If you are having real (not just lots of colds) medical problems, ask your doctor.

He is getting a lot of fevers, resp illnesses. Not sure what is going on. Once I get some answers from the dr's, I can make my final decision.

Pre-K or No Pre-K?

I am so happy I did not send my son to pre k.
I put the money towards sports, art classes, and Spanish lessons.
They have so many years ahead of school...I felt no need to add to it.
In a class of 23, he was ranked #2 as far as test scores. Never got his name on board or anything and lots of friends.
I think if you want to take on teaching him then everything will be fine.

Re: Pre-K or No Pre-K?

I would not use the he needs it to keep from getting sick as a reason to send him. My DD was in a program (not daycare but the regular 2-3 hours 2-4 days...2hrs 2days attwo ended with 4 days 3 hrs in a prek program) since age 2. So 3 years of a program. We also did activities like library story time, gymnastics, soccer, music etc. So we were out and about a lot. Well if DD was sick 3 or 4 times total a year that was a lot. Well DD#2 is the same but went this year 2.5 hours 4 days and will go 3hrs 5 days next year. Well DD#1 ended K missing about 50 days due to illness. No not colds...but 103-104 temp things. She was sick every 1.5-2 weeks. But her sister never caught any of the things. She even had her adenoids and partial tonsils done. No more sinus and ear infections but she got strep 3 times afterwards. I even saw an infectious disease...who even said the mono we thought she had in the fall was probably another virus which gives a false positive on the epstein barr test. He did say the any child that does not go to school more than 20-25 consecutive hours (he said in one class not in extra things) he felt lived in a bubble so even though she went to a program she was not in enough
to benefit. Luckily her teacher said she was a smart cookie who never needed reteaching and could always pick up from whenever she returned. They cannot find out why she has been so sick (excessively so) so it continues in 1st we will be looking ito it more.

I say a program is important. Classroom time cannot be replaced by evrn the most diligent parent. You can teach turn taking, listening, colors, shapes, writing, even reading. You can't get the social interaction with their peers a single playdate or storytime provides. It also helps build confidence and independence from their parents they get by being in the classroom. I don't think you need 5 full or even half days. I think any program a few times a week is enough to get that. The only reason my DD#2 is going 5 mornings is she did 4 this year. I thought it might be tol much but you knos she was upset wed and weekends and begged to go.

Talk to your ped if you are concerned but honestly base it more about being separated and the social aspect and just being familiar with what is expected at school. Btw infectious disease said the average healthy child get sick 5-7 times a year. Also my DD has a lot of allrrgies too which I think you of someone mentioned was a concern.

If you

Re: Pre-K or No Pre-K?

I signed him up at a local place. Waiting to hear if he gets the time slot we need though. It HAS to be afternoons as he has therapy in the mornings... We went to the allergist already and he hasn't outgrown his soy allergy and he is showing symptoms of other food intolerance issues. He is suppose to be outgrowing this stuff... He goes to the GI next week and then to the ped the following week... He is extremely bright and I am not really worried about him academically... He can cut with scissors, he knows all the basics. e is learning to write his letters (but his low motor tone holds him back a little bit). I am trying to get him into a sensory gym this fall... That will help is low motor tone issues!!!

Right now we are in a holding pattern.

Re: Pre-K or No Pre-K?

The decision was made for us as to whether he will or won't be going... First was we couldn't swing the deposit so that was the big one... The second was we weren't guaranteed the time we NEEDED.... He is on a waiting list for January... Just as I was getting use to the idea, this is what happens... His allergist was a little concerned because he is not getting over his food allergies and he seems to be developing more Chat Icon

He is too young to understand that he CAN'T have an m&m or red dye... When he is a little older, he will understand it better....

I haven't read all of the posts, but have you tried to get him into a specialized school paid for through the district, since he already receives services?

I would definitely ask your district for a developmental preschool, and then he could get speech and OT during the school hours. Developmental preschools may also be better able to handle his food allergies than some other private preschools since they are monitored by the state.

Has he ever taken a class without you? I definitely think it is important to do something solo before embarking on kindergarten.
