poppy flower tattoo?

so i absolutely want another tattoo and want to get it sometime in august. i was leaning towards a celtic knot to symbolize family or motherhood or mother/child, mother/daughter relationship. BUT then I was watching the opening ceremony for the olympics and they mentioned that poppies are a symbol of remembrance. i know it originates from WWI, but I THINK (hope) today it is just a generic symbol of remembrance for loved ones that have passed away. I have lost a lot of family members in the last couple years and I thought this would be a simple yet beautiful way to honor them. I did some tattoo research and found some beautiful images that I love!

I think inner ankle would be nice. I have a small tatoo on my outer right ankle - I wish I had done it inside. Good luck and post pics after you have it done.

I love poppy's. That first one is fantastic, but I'd want it smaller. Very nice choice, unique.

I think the pictures are beautiful and love the symbolism, but I feel they are such a deep red they look like gaping wounds....I don't know of there is a way to make them look less wound like. I want to get a lotus flower... I love flower tattoos!

Poppies are very specifically used to remember soldiers who died in war. They are not a general symbol of remembrance of loved ones. I mean, get the tattoo if you like it, but if you are going to permanently mark yourself you should know what it means.

Georgia O'Keefe painted a lot of red poppies. She might be good for inspiration too.

I was thinking the same. The first one looks like a gaping wound to me or a blood smear. Just being honest before you actually put it on your body. The first one just caught me off guard with the way it looked. I would make it a more defined flower. :)

this is why i'm asking, thanks!

eta: can anyone recommend another symbol of remembrance then? I don't want names or RIP and there are too many people i've lost recently to incorporate a different symbol for each person. i just want something simple to acknowledge them all. i'm bummed about the poppy because i really think it's beautiful but i don't want people to look at it and think a) is that blood on her wrist?! or b) i wonder who she lost in the war/wars?

There are several symbolisms for poppies . Personally I love the first picture you posted, it doesn't make me think of blood at all.

I think you should get whatever YOU want. If YOU love poppies and to YOU they remind you of people you’ve lost, then you should get it. I doubt most people know that poppies are specifically for war remembrance. Poppies are my favorite flower and I am an avid gardener and I didn’t know that.

Get something that means something to you and who cares what anyone else thinks. My left arm is a half sleeve of cherry blossoms and I know they have TONS of meanings, like new beginnings or transience of life, but I got them because the entire tattoo is based off a famous Japanese woodblock print called “Goldfinch” by Hokusai, no one ever notices the bird on the inside of my arm which is the actual focus of the tattoo. So even though everyone looks at my tattoo and thinks it means one thing, they're completely wrong.

Tattoos are so personal. Get your tattoo for you and no one else.

That being said, a dove is a universal symbol of remembrance.

ETA: California Poppies are orange, so you could always get it orange if you're concerned about the red - WOW! SOrry for huge pic, I'll try to resize

Re: poppy flower tattoo?

I thought the first one especially was very elegant but I have a flower tattoo that "fades" instead of having a defined edge and over time, it tends to look worn out. I have to get it recolored, and I think I'm going to go bolder so it lasts longer.

Fun fact... did you know poppies are where the drug opium are derived from? Chat Icon

I think the idea is sweet, but the only other flower I can think of is white calla lilies. They make me think of wakes though. Chat Icon

It must be hard to come up with one tattoo that encompasses all the loved ones you've lost, but perhaps you could focus on hope instead? For when you meet again? Something that makes you smile when you see it. I think the most important thing is that it has meaning for you and sparks happy memories of your loved ones.

And, that eating a poppy seed bagel can make you test positive for opium on some drug tests?

I agree. I love them...they make me think of The Wizard of Oz and, as a pp mentioned, Georgia O'Keefe paintings.

Totally. I mean, how much more personal can you get? I wanted a tattoo for a decade before multiple circumstances came together that led me to my ultimate choice. It has at least 3 different "meanings" for me, though to someone else it looks like just another flower tattoo. I don't really care. It's a part of me, and that's what is important.

Ditto on California Poppies, they come in shades of pink, white, orange, red... many to choose from.

Re: poppy flower tattoo?

http://www.whats-your-sign.com/poppy-symbolism.html

In Christianity, poppy symbolism is recruited to represent death as a period of tranquil slumber. This association is seen in metaphor as the red petals of the poppy symbolize the blood of a sacrificed Christ. Themes of resurrection and immortality (salvation of the soul) blossom as the poppy (and the spirit) never really die, just renew and ascend.

In Chinese symbolism, the poppy represents rest, beauty and success. However, its associations with opiate-induced stupors also lend meanings of sloth, dependence and an inability to temper pleasure with the banalities kicked up by living a pragmatic life. Honest masters know enlightenment is induced from within and through a connection with the infinite. Dependence upon external substances/influences to lift the veils of illusion is considered a lazy approach to enlightenment.

http://livingartsoriginals.com/flower-poppies.htm
The flower symbolism associated with poppies is beauty, magic, consolation, fertility and eternal life. The Egyptians included poppies at funerals and in burial tombs. The Greeks used poppies in the shrines of Demeter, goddess of fertility, and Diana, goddess of the hunt. Poppies denote sleep, rest and repose. In modern times, poppies have been associated with Flanders fields as an emblem of those who died in World War I.

Poppies in Chinese Art

Poppy SymbolPoppies represent the loyalty and faith between lovers.

The best "meaning" of a poppy tattoo I found is from this site:
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/poppy-tattoo-meaning.html
Therefore, what exactly is the intention behind getting this particular tattoo may best be explained by the person getting inked with it. There can be no precise explanation for choosing the poppy tattoo, however, this article will try to provide some probable explanation.

Re: poppy flower tattoo?

I think poppies would be a great way to honor loved ones that have passed. I like the picture with the more defined edges. The more softer/airbrush looking ones do look a little like open wounds.

In reference to their meaning...If poppies will symbolize rememberance of loved ones to YOU, get it!
