pet shop poll

i was just curious if anyones feelings towards pet shops have changed since joining the PETS board.

this is for people who are learning about puppymills.

I personally never have bought an animal at a pet shop and never would. But my ex bought me a puppy - that I refused to buy - at a pet store and he turned out to be the most wonderful dog.
Also, Misty is originally a pet store puppy (also from what I assume is a puppymill in Ohio) but we adopted her from her former owners.

never have, never would. I Cannot see paying that much for a dog when there are so many in shelters that need good homes.....I will admit, however, that I did not know they came from puppy mills until joining this site

I did not buy my Boogie from a pet shop and never did in the past either... BUT I will admit to not knowing much about puppymills until AFTER I got Boogie and I dont know if I did enough research on where he came from...

i am an activist you could say against the puppymills. I try to educate people about buying from the petshops, and i donate money to http://www.puppymillrescue.com

This site is amazing, what they do to save these dogs from years of abuse and breeding. There are also stories from former workers who worked first hand in the petstores and saw how badly the animals were treated.

You can apply to adopt a puppymill rescue dog, or you can be a foster parents, or you can just give a monetary donation. Its a great cause especially if you are interested in animal rights like i am

I would not buy a dog from a petshop, but I have bought other animals from pet shops(hamsters, bunnies, frogs, fish, etc) and probably would buy these types of animals from a pet shop again. I wasn't sure if this question was only about dogs

I know about puppy mills also

But even the puppy stores are gross

poor pups sit in there own poop for like forever

so not healthy for them

BUT I do have to say - that it breaks my heart to leave those little guys there. I just feel so bad for them. It's not fair.

We bought Cooper from a pet store... we really rescued him though. 2 days after we got him we had to rush him to the vet in a snow storm no less, because he coudln't catch his breath and was just coughing this terrible cough. Turns out he had kennel cough and pnemonia (sp?). The pet store covered that first visit to the vet, but after that, we were at the vet literally every single week because something was always wrong.

His poop wasn't normal until after a year. And we would call the pet store and complain and all they would say was that we could return him and get our money back or get a new dog... ARE YOU F'IN KIDDING ME?!

We would run into people in Petco when we had Cooper with us and we would get into convos about where we got our dogs and when they heard where we got him, they would gasp and tell us these horror stories about how they got their beloved dog from there and days after they took him home he dropped dead. We heard this from about 2-3 people.

We got in touch with an organization called CAPS and we're in the process of filing a complaint with the state attorney generals office. CAPS has managed to shut down all of 2 of this chain of pet stores.

Luckily now, Cooper is healthy and such a joy! We love him soo sooooo much!

I have purchased both my dogs from a pet shop. I did research on the shop and got referrals before I purchased the dog. I think if you research beforehand, you will be fine. I don't think that there is anything wrong with buying a dog from a reputable shop or breeder.

For dogs- I will only go to shelters or rescues or from someone who couldn't care for their animal anymore.

But DH wants an aquarium- that's okay then!

I chose other. I don't think I would... I adopted Katie from another owner... I think I would only buy from a breeder, or adopt from a shelter. I'm kind of stuck on Boston's now though, so I'd probably have to go to a breeder for one.
