I still see people posting on FB that the media is making people overreact. Does anyone still feel that way?

Yes and no. I do think we need to do something to keep this under control. But, I don't think the "powers that be" have thought about the long-term effects this will have for the most vulnerable. How many people will lose their job -- restaurant workers, bartenders, day care providers?

And what about students? Yes, I guess some kids will be able to learn online, but I don't think most will. And, does everyone have one computer per child?

I really don't have any answers. Yes, something needed to be done. But, I don't think they thought it through, IMO.

Re: Overreacting

I do think a lot of people are over reacting when it comes to hoarding TP and paper towel.

I don’t think saying no to play dates and keeping your family inside is over reacting at all. In order for social distancing to work, people have to actually do that. The sooner everyone gets on board, the sooner we can get back to normal. So all of the people having neighbor parties and posting photos of large groups with drinks ... they are the reason the rest of us will be stuck inside.

As much as I don’t want to see a national shut down and have it enforced by military-I fear it’s the only way to get people to wake the f up and follow along. It’s not forever. We’re all gonna get it. Hopefully when we do, there’s enough medical personnel and equipment to get those who need it through it.

I went to the supermarket this morning. Got what i could. I saw way too many people with entire carts full of paper towels. I don’t get it
But I smiled. I smiled at everyone I passed. Some scowled. Some smiled back and said “ya gotta smile right?”
Try to remember we are all in this together. Help each other when you can. Know there are people who can be extremely ill or die from this. And you staying in Can possibly save a life. Let’s all do our part.

PS
Thank everyone who’s out there everyday. Not just First Responders and Medical staff. The people working these supermarkets. The guys restocking from the trucking companies to keep it all Going. And remember all they did once it’s over too.

Exactly! The people in grocery stores, people working at Amazon, utilities workers (so we don't lose power and water, and get our trash picked up)...... so many people that still have to work.

My only question is to why everyone is taking such precaution now with this disease vs. swine flu, ebola, etc.

I can assure you that is not the case across the board. I live in a very republican community and no one believes anything is a hoax. Please don't make this about politics. Of coarse you are always going to have crazy, conspiracy theory type people on either side. I suggest you unfriend or unfollow those people.

In general, I feel that the media does focus a lot on the negative and likes to drive everyone into a hysteria. Ratings, ratings, ratings.

That being said, I do think the virus is cause for concern and I think it's the right call at this time to be overly cautious to avoid any type of mass outbreak that we cannot get out from under. But the media should focus less on the doomsday and more on the positives which is that most of us will be fine, most people will recover, most people are working to help one another and in all likelihood, we will all get through this.

Overreacting

While I am doing all the restrictions, I do think it's an over reaction. The group of people who would get very ill from this illness is the same grouping of people who would get very ill from getting the flu or any other virus out there. With closing everything, I really don't see an end in sight. How do you know when it's "safe" to come out. Unless they test every single person they will never know if the virus has been contained. I think we are going down a slippery slope and feel really bad for our small businesses and those who need to work at those businesses not getting paid for however long this takes.

media makes thinks worse, everyone has the ""expert" 5 million times a day. The President talks out his ass, saying one thing one min and something else the next. I agree with Cumo the Fed government has to decide across the country how to handle schools, public area or restrictions.

While I agree to follow all the advise and restrictions but the media is making is worse

I agree. I'm seeing our schools asking everyone to disinfect and sanitize all backpacks, lunch boxes, etc with Clorox. While I don't disagree that cleanliness is important, the fact is that the virus doesn't live on surfaces for that long. Not only that but there have been no confirmed cases in or around this district. People need to stop acting like this is the black plague. We do not need to disinfect every single thing we own with bleach.

Bleach will destroy fabric. You might as well throw it out and buy new if you are going to use bleach on anything.
Or burn it.
Just burn it.

Nah, I don't agree with that. I know plenty of Republicans who are taking this very seriously. Myself included. I don't think politics has anything to do with it.

I was definitely on the over reacting train in the beginning. Not so much anymore. There are confirmed cases in my town. I have spoken to people with family in Italy and it is downright scary. I also think the statement that it only fatally effects a certain group of people may be inaccurate. Did you see the images of the obits in Italy? Scary stuff.

unfortunately I see the split in my local community board. Those that are self identified Republican have called it an Obama hoax and still do. Maybe your town and community are different but I can see what people are saying and doing. There was a post about going to the gym and how they would need to be shot to stop going. It is insane to me.

I know. It's like common sense has gone out the window. I saw a mom in our local FB group telling people that if you have to leave your house, you should strip down immediately upon returning home and sanitize everything. I just don't know what to say anymore. There is no talking sense into people. They think fresh air is going to kill them. Chat Icon I wish I was making this up. I don't even know if the media is to blame for this or if people were just born this stupid.

Not shocked ammo is getting sold out. If people are losing their shit buying everything out, how long before looting starts? If/when it gets worse here, the worst of the worst come out. Out of fear and greed - taking advantage of the situation.

I’ll put it this way, nobody’s getting our TP.

I just read an article that stated that the average age of fatalities in Italy is 81 years old and 2/3 of them had 3 or 4 pre-existing health conditions. Do you think this is not accurate?

I'm concerned that might not be accurate. I have heard about people in their 40's and 50's too that were "healthy". I mean, IDK because I'm not there and I have not seen this on a news source (so I probably should not be saying it on a website and causing alarm - sorry about that) but I am starting to worry that we have been minimizing who can get effected. On the other hand there are people who have it and don't even know about it so IDK. I think I'm getting in my head. And now yours. LOL My apologies.

TBH I'm not even remotely worried. It sounds like Italian officials WANT to scare everyone else into acting quickly. If they had facts to back up a higher mortality rate, or the fact that young and healthy adults are dying, without a doubt they would be putting them out there. Very few people under 50 have died from this in Italy. At this point I would not worry that they're hiding information like that. Chat Icon

Exactly. Agreed. People and businesses are going to be financially ruined. I truly believe that tons of us already have this virus and are just asymptomatic. I am still struggling to understand why THIS particular virus is causing the entire country to shut down for months at a time. And yes this is a precedent for every future virus.

While I know the virus is real and can be deadly to some, the media is in overdrive trying to terrify everyone. I am not at all surprised that people go out and hoard stuff because when they keep telling you that we could be quarantined for months at the drop of a hat, of course you are going to panic and wonder what you will eat. Can anyone guarantee that there will be food and supplies continuously stocked over the next few months? That stores will be even open? That there will be healthy people to work there?

And then Trump said today he was told this would be like this until July or August. Really? China had it the worst and there are reports now that even they are returning "back to normal" after only 3 months.

That being said, I AM following the precautions and my family and I will do our part.
