Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

Am I the only one who thought eggs and peanut butter had to wait until age 2? Especially the peanut butter? Chat Icon We just came from our one year visit at the ped. and he said to introduce both and to watch for any reactions.

Also, I almost felt embarrassed that I would only let them give her one shot today. I knew she was due for the MMR but apparently also for the Prevnar and varivax (chickenpox). I opted to do the MMR in a month and then the chickenpox in December (there apparently need to be 30 days inbetween because they are live). I know I made the right decision for us but my question is-am I the only one who has done this??? Chat Icon

Lastly, she just hit 20 lb. and I had been told in NY that the car seat should remain rear facing as long as comfortably possible. My ped. here told me to turn it around. What are your thoughts on this?

TIA! Sorry so long but I figured I would just make one big post about these things! Chat Icon

We started eggs and PB at 1 year. We were told since we had no family history of allergies that it was ok to start. We also turned the carseats around at a year. Rear facing is still safer though.

Re: Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

#1 I thought it was 2 also for the eggs and peanut butter ,if you feel better then I say wait !!

#2 I think you made the right choice doing the shots seperately !! I did that also (not by choice but that was a good idea i would have never thought of waiting )

#3 I agree with NY guidlines on the carseat situation I always waited until 25 lbs ! Unless she is really long and her legs arent comfy

Re: Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

We had our one year check a few weeks ago. I was told Eggs are okay now, avoid peanut butter....
She got the prevnar and flu shot. Getting the other flu shot this month...MMR is being broken up into 3 seperate shots starting at 15 mths or later.
My DD was 20 lbs. 12 oz...doctor said we can turn the seat around if we want to. But she is still fine rear facing, so she is staying that way. HTH

Re: Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

My son has had eggs since 1

My ped said I could give PB now (I just asked him at his 15 mnth appt) so DH has been giving him a little bit here and there. I'm not ready to make PB&J yet though for him. ETA: There is no need to turn her just yet - so I would wait that out - she's safer facing the rear!

Re: Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

My dr said eggs are OK to introduce at 1 yr, but to hold off on nuts or peanut butter until two.

I also delay and split vaccines so you are not the only one.

Technically you can begin to turn the car seat at a year, but the longer the better. Just make sure that there is enough leg room if you keep it rear-facing.

Eggs we started at a year...

Peanut Butter too..but I did that on my own..

In New York State it is recommended to not turn them around until they are a year old. It's not the law though. Some states it is a law...

I split up the shots too...

Eggs/PB: The ped told me 1 yr for egss, 2 yrs for PB. I followed that, but I know TONS of people have given PB way earlier than 2 and it's fine. I'm expecting #2 now and doubt I'll wait till 2 for PB this time around.

Shots: I'm a huge advocate of delaying and splitting shots. It's ALWAYS better to err on the side of caution and give the shots at separate times! The only benefit of giving shots together is the convenience of one trip to the ped, and my kid's safety is more important than that!!!

Car seat: We turned it front facing around a year or maybe 13 months. DS is super tall for his age and it really was getting tough for him to be rear facing. I would have kept a more petite child rear facing a couple months longer if I could.

Lucas started eggs before one.

At his 1 year check up the doctor told us there were only three things to remember not to give:

1. Honey in any form
2. Nuts (including peanut butter)
3. Shellfish

Thank you SO much for your responses. Chat Icon

It's really interesting to me that doctors differ (and a year at that) on the PB. I think I will wait a few more months. She has chronic constipation anyway. Chat Icon

I think we'll wait on the seat too. She is on the small side so it can't hurt.

Re: Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

My DD is 15 months and just under 22 pounds. She's still rear-facing, I plan to keep her like that as long as possible....she's still comfy. Hopefully until 18 months.

Eggs have been given since around a year, there are eggs in so much of the food we eat too....so that made me less nervous.

I am neurotic about PB still, she still hasn't had it, and we have no family history of an allergy. We'll just give it when I'm comfy, no rush.

At her 15 month well visit on Friday (we're a few weeks behind b/c of her procedure a few weeks ago), she's supposed to get MMR and chicken pox and flu shot. I’m not giving them all. I’m giving her chicken pox then, and will wait for MMR until 18 months I think. Will wait a few weeks after chicken pox to give her the flu shot.

You are prefectly justified to question things, that's what makes you her mom, YOU are who looks out for her best interest Chat Icon

Re: Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

I thought the recommendation for peanuts was at least 2, maybe 3? Egg yolks I was told I could give now at 10 months, but the whites we are supposed to wait to introduce until a year. As far as both foods go, if you are uncomfortable giving them, ignore your doctor and wait until you feel okay with them. DC doesn't need these foods necessarily, and I don't see anything wrong with waiting a bit.

As for MMR, we are getting that at 15 months, but I think some doctors give it at 12. You could ask to delay the shot or see if your doctor will give it in individual shots (one for mumps, one for measles, etc.).

The carseat you can turn around when your child is a year old and 20 pounds, but again, there is no harm in leaving it rear facing longer, and some people recommend this if your child is still comfortable. We plan to leave DS this way unless he's too squished.

Re: Our one year ped. visit...I have some questions/concerns....

We got the green light for eggs at 10 months. Peanuts were told to wait until 2-3 - as well as with shellfish. Each dr seems to have their own rules though.

If you are not comfortable starting peanuts then wait - you don't have to do something sooner than you are ready.

My ped here gives MMR at the chicken pox the following month (yes it is 30 days between). Remember there are guidelines from the AAP but there are also regional things too.

You need to do what you are comfortable with - if hold off on peanuts is what you want or waiting an extra month for shots etc you are the mommy.

Etd to add that 1 year and 20 lbs is the minimum requirement to turn the seats - DD is only 21 lbs and 30.5 ounces and is still rear facing at 15.5 months and I'm not rushing to turn her as she sleeps and is still comfortable rear facing.
