Open house questions

I know these questions are asked all the time but I'm still a bit confused! We're ready to start going to open houses but do not consider ourselves to be "seriously" looking yet..we just want to start seeing what is available in our price range, etc. etc.

1-We can go to an open house without being pre-approved, right?

2-We haven't decided yet if we're going to use a buyer's agent. So what do we do when they ask you to sign that thing (sorry, I know that's not the technical name for it) about who is representing you? If we say no one, are we screwed later if we like the house and hire a buyer's agent b/c we have to use the agent at the open house?

3-Does the agent at the open house ask you any questions about your price range or anything else along those lines?

thank you!!

Re: Open house questions

At the open houses I have been to, it does not matter if you are preapproved, I have never been asked if I have an agent, just my name, address and telephone number.

the agents made some chitchat about how seriously we were looking, how many houses we had seen, but that was it.

Re: Open house questions

I have been asked if I have an agent, but my agent always told me to not sign in and tell them I already have an agent.
I've never been asked if I was preapproved, but in all honesty, you'll probably want to get that done just so you have it in place incase you do love something you see.
I've also never been asked about my price range, and would be highly annoyed if someone did ask me that.

thanks for the replies so far.

So when you give your name and phone #, etc, that's you saying that you're not being represented by an agent?

thanks!

Re: Open house questions

They may ask your if you are preapproved...you do NOT have to be at all...anyone can look at a house.

They will ask you if you are working with anyone....if you are say yes...if not say no. They ask because they look for new clients at these things and if you are working with someone they want to spend time with someone who does not have an agent yet.

They will say "so is this something you may be interested in...is this in your price range" you do not have to tell them exactly how much you want to spend. We were always very vague.

Re: Open house questions

Just to add to the above posts, if you tell the agent you aren't working with anyone, they may ask you more about price ranges, what you are looking for, etc. because they may want to get you to use them as a buyers agent. You aren't obligated to, but if you give them any additional info, they will most likely contact you or send you listings.

Re: Open house questions

Open houses are perfect opportunities to browse before you are ready to seriously look. To answer your questions, you do not need to be preapproved, you do not have to give out any information about yourself you are not comfortable with (DH and I used to write fake names and phone numbers on those sign in sheets), and you don't have to answer any questions from an agent about your price range. Remember, you are in control of the process, not the agent! HTH!

Re: Open house questions

You do not need to be preapproved. I still sometimes go to open houses just to look even though we bought our house last year.

Re: Open house questions

I still go to open houses in my neighborhood to get improvement ideas.
