One Year Molars

Please tell me that it's totally normal for my formerly happiest baby ever to become a total crazy monster.
Please tell me it doesn't last very long and that she'll be back to her sweet self very soon.
Please tell me there is some secret remedy to make her feel better Chat Icon

DD is almost 18m (16m adjusted). A few days ago she started being whiny, which is TOTALLY not like her. The other night she spiked a fever (didn't take her temp but she was HOT) and had a runny nose - all normal teething symptoms for her. That night I felt one molar, the top right, had pushed through the gum. It was the very beginning, you know, that first hard spot before the tooth is really out, the "white line" part. The last three days or so she's been sort of impossible. This is a kid that rarely whines, seriously almost never cries. She's a mess. Crying over nothing, rolling around on the floor whining and squealing over absolutely nothing. She is OK and somewhat happy when she gets the full dose of tylenol but its hard to give her - I cant get her to take it straight (throws up immediately) and she's very smart so she knows when it's hidden in things. The only guaranteed dose I get is in her morning bottle. After that it's a crapshoot whether or not she'll eat whatever it is that I hide it in.

Anyway does this sound normal for molars? She was really such a good teether with her other teeth. She usually gets more cold symptoms than she does whiny/fussiness. I feel so bad for her cause sometimes she literally lays on the floor rolling around crying and nothing I can do will console her Chat Icon . I haven't taken her to the ped cause it really does seem to be teething. Her symptoms are pretty random and they come and go.. Hasn't had a fever in days now, has a very very minor rash today on her eyebrows, back and chest (looks like a very minor heat rash), runny nose is only when she gets upset now, but fussiness is at an all-time high, fingers in the ears. She hasn't been chewing on things quite as much but right before the first one popped out she would chew her fingers a lot. And she was drooling a lot a few days ago as well (has tapered off last few days. She's sleeping fine at night but her naps are way shorter during the day and she wakes up pretty unhappy from them...

We've done tylenol, frozen bagels/pancakes, ice, teething gel...nothing consistently helps.

DS was miserable for about 3 weeks when his molars where coming in. He hardly slept or ate. He also had a lot of eczema. I would take her to the Dr just to make sure it is her teeth and not an ear infection or something else.

With the 1 and 2 yr molars dd was the devil until they came through and each time one broke through. OMG, they are horrible. She didn't have a hard time teething besides the normal crankiness, never really went through anything bad until the molars. They are the devil.

Anytime dd acted out like a maniac I knew molars were coming. I got the tylenol and advil ready b/c that was the only thing that would turn her semi normal for a hours at a stretch. haha

Are you sure it's the teething and not an ear infection from the runny nose? The rash could have been a follow up viral rash to the ear infection.

If the rash is still there, stretch it out. If the rash disappears, it's a viral rash.

thanks so much, i will try that when she wakes up from her nap.
the rash is so light that my DH thought it was weird that I even called the PED about it Chat Icon and my MIL looked at it (she's no doctor but she had 4 kids) and barely noticed it.

Re: One Year Molars

Tylenol did NOTHING for my kids. She's more than old enough for Children's Motrin, I'd try that. You can also cycle that with Tylenol every 3 hours, switching between the 2. Hugs!

i tried to see which teeth were pushing through but its very hard to get in her mouth!! she bit me the one time i did Chat Icon . it did feel like the bottom left was swollen too though so hopefully that one makes its way out and this can be over. but i really think thats whats hurting her Chat Icon

My ds is 15m and is getting his third molar plus one of the side teeth. When he got his bottom molars he was screaming at night and havIng fits during the day. Advil seems to help him. Good luck!

I highly recommend the ibuprofen/Motrin/Advil! And you can switch. I'll tell you why some peds do not recommend it - because parents forget which one they gave, mix things up, and can possibly overdose their kids on either med. (I'm an RN) I don't know what they Tylenol tastes like, but DS loves the white grape flavor of the Motrin!

Motrin in the best. I stopped using tylenol. I know quite a few people who agree that tylenol does nothing for their babies/toddlers but Motrin/advil works wonders. There is infant motrin/advil.

One of my girls has started thrashing when she does not get her way. This is totally new. Yes she is the demanding twin, but this is crazy. She is definitely hurting and up for an hour last night when we usually NEVER hear from them. I didnt connect her fits with teeth.
we always use motrin, it is sooooo much better.

Normal!! Last weekend we took DS to the doctor bc we thought he had an ear infection, nope just molars! DS can be difficult to begin with but this is nuts. He wakes up at night and just cries and is moody a lot...I feel so bad for him!
