Older houses, need your opinion

the house we are buying is build in 1918 but is very well maintained from looking inside and outside, still have to get it inspected obviously, but my question is...

do most buyers prefer newer houses, or it doesn't really matter if the older house is very well maintained and in good condition??

my mom is telling me that I will have a problem selling this older house later on if we decide to upgrade to a bigger house....

what are your opinions?? Thanks!

Re: Older houses, need your opinion

I would love to buy an older home like that!
Our house was built in 1987...the house we are buying was built in 1955. I dont think it matters as long as its in good shape.

I love OLD houses. They always have character! If it's in good condition and you are willing to maintain and upgrade slowly then I think it's worth it!

Re: Older houses, need your opinion

this house is beautiful! it has that old victorian feel and the house is very well maintained and upgraded, you can't even tell it's 87 yrs old.
It's own by an older couple that you can tell they are very aware of their living surroundings.

I've actually seen a lot of the new houses, none of them gave me this feeling! Chat Icon

and it's in excellent move in condition, other than painting the walls (we plan to do that regardless any house we get), we don't seem to have to do any fixing (unless the house inspector tells me otherwise, then the seller will have to do something!).

I love older homes especially victorians...I dont think you will have a problem selling the home in the future...age doesnt really matter, and the character that an older home has really brings in buyers...

If you love the home and it checks out ok by the engineer, I would go for it

Older homes have details and character that are hard to find in newer homes. DH and I were drooling over a 1910 farmhouse that had been restored- it was gorgeous. Unfortunately, it was so close to our wedding, and when I called after the wedding it was already in contract.

Re: Older houses, need your opinion

My parents just sold their older house for a newer one because thing were starting to go wrong and they didn't want to have to pay all of the money to restore it all.
It was a great house - with a lot of charm and personality....but it can be really expensive to have an old house!

Re: Older houses, need your opinion

I don't think it's a drawback at all... a lot of buyers prefer the character of an older home (myself included) and to be honest, many of the older homes have less problems because they were built better. New construction is littered with problems - I can't tell you how many times I receive calls from newer homeowners who want to sue the prior owner or construction company for defects (I'm an attorney). Just because a home is newer doesn't mean it's better built - as long as the owners have maintained the home well, that's all that matters!

I used to live in a vintage apartment building built in the early '20s and LOVED it! Older homes that have been kept up have so much character and charm! I'd love to buy a home from 1918!!

Re: Older houses, need your opinion

Our house was a former chicken farm that was built in 1904! I love it because it has the original wood floors, moldings and two big windows with leaded glass. It also has the glass doorknobs, and cute little built-in drawers in the bedrooms. I think that the age of the house wouldn't be a drawback as long as the house is in good condition when inspected.
