For parents that can't work from home and NEED to work to feed their family, is the state offsetting the cost of daycare the days the child is not in school? Believe it or not, not everybody in NYC or LI is loaded with unlimited funds to be able to pay for both the exorbitant school taxes AND the expensive cost of daycare in this state. So is the state stepping in? Doubtful.
For the teachers that are against opening schools, have they been taking the utmost precautions since March? Staying home, not seeing other people, social distancing, wearing masks, 100% of the time? And the same restrictions for their kids and spouse? If school isn't safe neither is a BBQ with friends where you're not 100% on your covid game.
I don’t think schools should be opening full time in September, but i also have been going overboard with the rules. My kids haven’t seen friends or gone to a store since March, and the only people we see without masks are our parents and siblings. Ive gone into a building a total of 4 times since April 1
Are you able to continue distance teaching them and be ok with them not being social with friends?

I think it makes perfect sense to move the kids from one building to another building and pretend the second building is a magical covid-free safe space. It also makes sense to believe that a building is covid-free 3 days a week and a hotspot for diseases the other 2 days.

yep this has been my argument since hearing partial days in school. It is so stupid!!! so my kids can be in aftercare/daycare with a bunch but not in school??!!!
Fuckkking dumb assss plans.
Also cant wait to hear teachers complain what they are supposed to do with theri children if their kids arent in school. cause i have heard this already and apparently its ok for teachers to use school as a "daycare" but not other parents!!
I did see depending on the threat level a district on long island would have all day schools.
lets hope the risk is low!!

There was an article posted here a couple of weeks back that discussed an unofficial study of 545 daycares that have been open since March. There were less than .2% of covid infections noted. Seeing how there have not been horrible outbreaks from these daycares, I don't see why schools have to be closed or treated so different. If anything, I would think older kids would be safer than toddlers.

Opening schools back full time with some extra precautions.
And for the parents who are absolutely against sending their kids, they should move to a homeschooling program. There are plenty of excellent programs available. Because I guarantee you that the only people who are truly ok with remote learning or half day or half week are either SAHM's or parents who have a ton of extra income (like an extra mortgage payment) to afford private nanny's and tutors.

Sahm here. I need them back in school and I would prefer it be full days! But I also babysit 3 of my niece and nephews 5 days a week. 7 kids all 7 and under. So yea I need my soon to be 3rd grader and kindergartener back in school for my sanity!  Aside from all that, I am worried the toll this could take on the kids mental health and their education. So I agree open with extra precautions!

I would love for my kids to go back full time. Dh would love to teach his students face to face full time. I just don't know what precautions would make that safe and keep numbers low enough to make it sustainable. I worry that full time school will lead us right back to spiking cases and full time distance learning. That is the reason I'm trying to be okay with half time school.

I am ok with part time school, if it means that they will be able to keep buildings open. I fear a full time return will completely shut schools again by November. My big concern is what I do with my children on the days they are not scheduled to be in school. I do need my children to be in school while I teach- which is why I never understood the rage towards parents who say the same thing. The reason so many SAHM go back to work when their children enter Kindergarten, is because they are now out of the house all day and they don't have to pay for daycare. That's just the way society has always worked.

I'm sorry, that is scary. The district where I live has given an option for full-time remote learning that you can sign up for. They haven't announced what regular school will be like yet. But at least there is an option here for families like yours.

This is the excuse they’re using to justify school closings even though there are zero proved cases of covid that originated in a school setting. The same thing happened last year with the measles, those that wanted to pass the bills to make vaccines mandatory validated their actions by conveniently using the outbreak even though not one case originated in a school, not one! And there were zero deaths due to measles. None of that mattered though and those legislators were still able to continue with their plans and deny the right of an education to thousands of healthy kids. Personally, the same precautions I take with covid are the same precautions I take with the flu but if I were a person to take extra precautions to this specific virus, schools would not be what I’d fear the most.

The whole thing is SO political at this point. CNN literally had an article saying that the WH and Trump want teachers to die because he wants to send kids to school.
Democratic states will keep kids out of school so that Trump gets defeated. I by no means do not love the man, but we are shooting ourselves and our children in the foot by making this such a political issue.
I hate when politicians are so diametrically opposed to the majority of everyday citizens. The majority of New Yorkers want their kids in school.
Here's a thought - have parents who prefer remote be taught remotely (by older teachers) and those who want schools open be taught in person. It will lessen the numbers of kids in the classroom and satisfy most people. It isn't really that hard to think outside the box.

They did have 1,000 campers so while 82 sounds like a lot, they also didn’t take precautions of limiting the amount of people.
Across MO they usually have 20,000 campers every year.

That doesn't make any sense. None. At all.
They don't HAVE to do that. Democratic states are not going to vote for Trump. New York isn't turning red anytime soon.
Also, the issue isn't black and white. Of course people want their children back in school. But most people want to see at least some precautions in place.
Also, it is July 8. It is too early to make any promises. I am on both sides of this (teacher and parent) and I can tell you that innovative solutions ARE being discussed and plans are being proposed. Nothing is definite. Far from it. But people think and read in clickbait and soundbites and nuance doesn't fit into those things.
I recommend everyone speak their mind when appropriate. Reach out to your district. The PTA. Your representatives. Etc. etc. Advocate for what you want to see.
Frankly, if you want your kid in school in September, please do your part to keep the curve flat. Wear your mask when can't social distance, particularly when indoors. (I'm generalizing here - not referencing the OP, the QP or anyone in particular.)
And if you (again, general you) know anyone from one of those goddamn red states that fukked this up royally, tell them to stay the fukk out of NY. Seriously. Visit another time.
I actually have a good feeling about September IF things stay the same.

My kids haven’t seen friends or gone to a store since March, and the only people we see without masks are our parents and siblings. Ive gone into a building a total of 4 times since April 1
Are you able to continue distance teaching them and be ok with them not being social with friends?
I am, but I also feel like if I were to let them see one or two friends outdoors, individually, it would be a much smaller risk than hundreds/thousands of kids in a single school building.
That being said, I will be okay sending them if it’s small groups, and if they’re taking all of these measures.
