Nicholas Paul- 9 weeks early-updated with pics!!

I had my beautiful baby boy 9 weeks early. I was due May 5th, but Nicholas had his own plans and arrived on March 2nd via emergency c-section!

On Sunday, February 26th I wasn't feeling good all day. I had severe heartburn, but I have acid reflux to begin with so I just thought I had over done it with eating out all weekend long. I started to feel better around 6 or 7 that night. I started to get ready for bed and around 9-10pm that night I started having swirling lines in my vision that lasted about 10 minutes and then went away. I went to bed and said I would call the doctor in the morning. I woke up with the worst headache of my life. I couldn;t even put my head down on the pillow it hurt so bad, but I am a teacher and this was the first day back after winter break so I got up and went to work. I tried calling my doctor at about 10am when I had a prep period, but they kept me on hold to long and my students came back. When I went on my lunch break I went home for lunch and called the doctor. They told me to come in at 2:15. I called the school and told them I would not be back for the day. My mom took me to the doctor but I actually saw the high risk doctor and not my regular one. They checked my pressure and it was 139/90. He told me to go immediately to the hospital to have my pressure monitored. I went to North Shore Manhasset and was put on a blood pressure machine to be monitored. After about an hour they decided to admit me because my pressure would not go down. They started me on magnesium to prevent me from having a seizure and to also prevent any brain damage to the baby. The magnesium is awful. It made me feel shaky and nauseous and hot. They also put me on a blood pressure medicine as well. This was all Monday. I was still in labor and delivery on Tuesday, but eventually they moved me to one of the new rooms in PP. The rooms are gorgeous. They are like hotel rooms and had a couch that DH could sleep on. I was still being monitored, but I was feeling better. On Thursday, March 1st my doctor came in and told me I was going to stay in the hospital until I gave birth. So I could have been there for another 4-5 weeks until the baby was more mature, but they had given me steriods to help mature the baby's lungs. Thursday night though my pressures kept going higher and higher and I wasnt feeling well. My DH had been with me all week and since i had been doing well he went home to sleep hoping to go back to work the next day. My sister stayed with me that night and by morning they were moving me back to labor and delivery to be monitored again. My doctor came in and said they were going to discuss my case with the other doctors and decide what was best. I called my husband and told him to get to the hospital along with my parents. The doctor came back in and they decided that it was best that I have an emergency c-section because my pressures kept rising. My husband was there and they started to prep me for the surgery. They also started me back on the magnesium to help try to lower the pressure. I was wheeled into the operating room. That whole process wasnt as bad as I expected and my son Nicholas Paul was born on March 2nd at 8:28am. He weighed 2lbs 15oz and was 15 inches long. He was taken to the NICU right away. I got to see him and give him a kiss and then they took him. I got sick in the operating room from the anesthesia, but it still wasn't as bad as I expected. In recovery they gave me a PSA pump with the pain medication that I could push a button and give me the pain meds every 6 minutes until i felt relief. That was so great because I never really felt the pain! I was also given liquid motrin with was fantastic! I eventually went back to my room and was comfortable. Later that night they had me get up, but I could only stand for about a minute before I felt dizzy. I was better the next day and was able to go to the bathroom with the help of a nurse. I was able to eat solid foods the next day, but I was still on the magnesium which didn;t make me feel to great. By about 10pm the night after my c/s I went to finally see my baby. He was so tiny, but he was doing well. I stayed in the hospital until March 7th since I had another day of headaches so I was put back on the magnesium for the 3rd time, but was discharged on March 7th. Nicholas is doing well, but is still in the NICU as I write this. We are hoping to have him home in the next few weeks, but he has to be able to take a bottle and he's still fighting the nurses on it. He is breathing on his own though and has gained weight. He is currently 4lbs 7oz and is so cute! If you read all of this you deserve a medal! But i wanted to share my story in case anyone else has to go through something like this! Thanks all!

Update-9/11/12
NIcholas came home on May 8th-3 days after his due date. That was the best day of my life. He is doing fantastic and is such a loving, sweet and happy baby. He is about 13lbs now and getting bigger and stronger everyday. I just wanted to share again with you in case anyone else is in my shoes and you see the light at the end of the tunnel!
