New Question added..Are credit protection charges on your credit card BS?
I just noticed these charges ($3) on my last 2 statements. What is this? Can I get rid of it?
* New question:
So I just called to find out what this charge is & she told me that it was a protection plan for identity theft.. like if someone steals my SS# to open credit cards..
Do you guys have this protection on your card? Is it worth it?
I hve never had my SS# stolen before but I have had my credit card # stolen by a store employee once & was not held responsible for all the charges made by him.

There should be a phone number next to the charges -- and you should call them to find out. It might be one of those programs where you pay each month and if you lose your job they make payments for you -- but they have to get your permission to do that.
If there is no phone number next to the charges, you should contact your CC company and ask about them.

Thanks, I'll check for the number. It's not something that they can force me to keep right?

is it Doscover Card?
It was a B!tch to get them to leave me alone, but yes, you can remove it.
I didn't think it was worth it, personally, but I like to think positively!

all companies no assistance if you should have a problem with theft all of which you can do yourself. I would get more information on it and determine if you really want it. You may of signed up for it without thinking you did (something free for a couple of months then they charge you.
just call your bank that charged it...

Re: New Question added..Are credit protection charges on your credit card BS?
I had my SS# stolen a couple of years ago and did not have the protection on any of my cards. I had a personal identity theft consultant and was not responsible for any of the charges. Part of it may have been because I could prove I wasn't anywhere near where the charges were made, but regardless I wasn't charged for having them look into the situation. When they tried to get me to sign up for these things later telling me that I would get personal attention I politely informed them that I knew I could already get it for free and I didn't need to pay for it. You may find out about ID theft sooner with the detection on your card, but you'll get the service whether you pay for it or not.

Re: New Question added..Are credit protection charges on your credit card BS?
I think they are BS. A few months back, I got a bogus charge on my CC and my company contacted me about it. They removed it right away.
I also have had HP add charges to my CC for yearly "technical assistance". It was damn near impossible for me to get them to remove it (they kept transferring me around and putting me on hold for hours) so I just called my CC company and they removed it ASAP.

Re: New Question added..Are credit protection charges on your credit card BS?
We don't have it. We had a card compromised a year ago when someone hacked into a grocery store computer system. Some of the charges were to an ancestry website and we were advised to put a freeze on our credit because this is apparently typical of people trying to open credit in your name (they get names and addresses from the ancestry sites)
Anyway, we have a freeze on our credit which means that no new credit can be opened until we thaw the credit (with a pin number that only we have).
If you are concerned about identity theft you could freeze your credit and not pay that monthly fee.
