We weren't seriously looking. We had a small house that DH bought with his ex-wife. We planned on staying 2 years at most in that house.
I came back from the honeymoon, had the summer off and just looked. If we saw something, great, if not, no big deal.
We found this house right away but we walked out and laughed the first time. After seeing move in condition houses, with other's tastes, for more than we wanted to spend, we decided to look at this house again. We computed what it would cost to fix up exactly the way we would want it, put in a very low-ball offer and got it.
I bought my house for location and layout, everything else could be changed.

Started looking in April 2005 put a bid on our first house in May, that fell through, found the house we are now in in June and closed in August.

We had been looking online and driving by houses for over a year but weren't ready to buy till 1 week before we found the one we bought. We only went inside a total of 3 houses.
ETA: I still look at houses online and it only solidifies my desion.

Started looking 4 weeks ago, and we go to contract next week! Looked all day long 5 days a week, and finally found our "HOME" last week in Wantagh! We knew exactly what we wanted, looked online every day, and wouldnt even waste our time going to look at a house if i didnt have the criteria we wanted. I feel very lucky!!!

We looked for about a month found our house about a weeks ago and we go into contract this week.. We had found another house also but that didn't work out... We knew what we were looking for so it didn't take us very long.

I would say it took a year, but not a solid year of searching. We were very on again off again about it....
Now I am afraid we are overpaying for our house...but it is the house for us.
ETA: I was online every day checking, and I went to a lot of houses without DH, so I was searching for a year. "We" were searching on again off again.
That is how I knew the neighborhood I wanted and all the things I wanted in a house. Happy to report that I am getting all the things I want except stairs!

16-18 months...160 houses, 8 offers (the 8th was the winner LOL). That 160 doesn't include the number of drive-by's (as in, we were interested until we saw the house/property/neighborhood). I would add another 2 dozen to that number.
It's exhausting and frustrating and yes, even fun at times...don't give up!

 holy cr*p! 160 houses?  DH and I haven't kept track, but if I had to guess... I would say that in the past 8 months we've seen at least 70 houses! we've made 3 offers. the first offer we made was on a condo/townhouse and we pulled out before we went to contract (THANK GOD!) and 2 offers were rejected.

Different market...started looking in September 05, closed in April 06. Had a deal fall through in between. But I saw my house in late March 06 and had my offer accepted within a week. I think it's so simple elsewhere. No lawyers, closing in days, etc.
DH's brother has been looking since January 2005 in NY and has yet to find his house. He has over $100K saved at this point and nothing.

Yes, (at least) 160. I kept the mls papers on all of them - it helped with the search. We'd make notes on what we liked and didn't like...and how long it was on the market for - if the price dropped, what it sold for, etc.  It really helped educate us on the process and LI housing in general.

it took Dh and i 5 months to find our house Something just told me to go back and look in Rockypoint! and here we are we are in our house 1 month already!

It was the first house we saw, but we spent another 6 weeks looking at other houses before we decided it was the one.

I looked at the market in the town that we wanted for over a year. we went to a couple of open houses in November but didnt start seriously looking until January. We put an offer on a house in early February. At the time I thought maybe we should give it more time, and look at more houses - but i am so happy with our decision because i havent seen any houses that i like better come on the market since we bought our house....
