Re: New Paltz area

You may want to look at Newburgh. DH's uncle is a doctor there. I think it is a little more built up but not terribly metropolitan - pretty laid back.

Re: New Paltz area

My dad lives in Poughkeepsie which is across the Hudson, but my mom worked at SUNY New Paltz. It is colder and gets much more snow. New Paltz is an artsy town, very bohemian.

Re: New Paltz area

I went to SUNY New Paltz. It is definately a college town. It is very laid back. If you are looking for a more suburban area, you might want to consider cities around it.

I went to high school in Hyde Park and hated it. Chat Icon I left after a year. It's one of those "it's a nice place to visit.." type of places. First day of hunting season all of the guys were out of school hunting. Just not what I was used to.

Upstate is VERY different. Go to visit..Stay a week and see how you like it. There are areas I like upstate but I personally do not love the Hudson valley.

If I were to move upstate I'd go to Saratoga Springs. I LOVE THAT TOWN!

Newburgh has good areas and not-so-good areas- and I think the schools are iffy.

Orange County (which is where Newburgh is located) is the fastest growing county in NY State (I read this in the Journal News, the Westchester/Rockland/Putnam area daily) so I am not sure what this will mean for real estate prices down the line- right now, it's less expensive than LI but I don't know if that will change.

DH and I bought a house in Putnam County last year. We love it here. Our house would have likely been at least $50-60k more on LI, but taxes are still high. However, I like the quiet and more rural feel, and I love that we can get on the highway to go to the mall at 5 pm and actually drive (most of the time!)

I agree. DH and i want a "quiter" , "less pressured" lifestyle. We just feel like LI doesnt meet our needs or interests. Plus, the traffic here is SO ridiculous and we have HAD it!! Chat Icon

It's north of Albany- not too far, maybe a half hour? I love it too- I was at a conference there recently.

Yes--it is 1/2 hour from Albany. I worked there for 5 summers and just love it. I would love to move there.

My sister just closed on her house in Newburgh. I'm not that familiar with the area, but she did a TON of research and is in a really lovely part of town.

Just an opinion of someone who was born and raised in the Hudson Valley area....yes, it's nice...I loved my childhood, etc., but honestly I wouldn't go back to live forever.

A "quieter" lifestyle it is...sometimes it can be tooooooo quiet. Needless to say from the people I went to school with the ones that moved on - out of the areas are the ones that have gone somewhere and actually did something, with their lives. The ones that have stayed....either are drug addicts, alcohols or got pregnant at an early age. In other words....this is "what there was to do" up there.

Very true. There aren't even any Dave and Busters type of places (where I lived at least).

Dh went to school there. It's a cute, artsy college town. We used to take road trips when I visited and I really liked Kingston and Woodstock too. I don't know where your staying but there's a place called Willam's Lake that is very nice for a weekend.

Re: New Paltz area

i live in orange county now, in a town called Harriman (by the woodbury commons) and we love it up here, it is so pretty. i am from westchester county and DH is from rockland and it was just to damn expensive to get a place in either counties so we decided to go 25 min north and settled for our area. Our school district is one of the best in the area. Their is a TON of shopping, its not like we live in the hicks or anything although their are town that are like that but they are more north then us. I am a good 35-40 min from newburgh/new paltz area. If you are considering newburgh, be careful their are a lot of not so great areas their, i dont know much about new paltz other then its def a college town, if you need any info on towns by me feel free to FM me. it is quiet up here but we really dont care, i am not a city girl and want to raise my child with plenty of room to run and play.
