Nazi Guard Deported to Austria

Published: March 19, 2009
An 83-year-old man who admitted that as a Nazi concentration camp guard he took part in a two-day killing spree in which 42,000 people were killed was deported to Austria Thursday from his home in Wisconsin, immigration officials said.

The former guard, Josias Kumpf, admitted that he participated in a murderous November 1943 Nazi operation that went by the code name “Aktion Erntefest” — Operation Harvest Festival — in which roughly 42,000 Jewish men, women and children were murdered at three Nazi camps in eastern Poland in two days.

Mr. Kumpf acknowledged his role was as a guard and an assassin at the Trawniki Labor Camp, where 8,000 men, women and children were shot dead in a single day, Nov. 3, 1943, Justice Department officials said.

He was removed earlier this week from his home in Racine, Wis., by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Mr. Kumpf immigrated to the United States from Austria in 1956, and became a citizen in 1964. A spokesman for the Justice Department said officials began their efforts to deport him in 2003, when a federal lawsuit was filed in the Eastern District of Wisconsin to strip him of his citizenship because of his participation in war crimes. His citizenship was revoked in 2005.

“Josias Kumpf, by his own admission, stood guard with orders to shoot any surviving prisoners who attempted to escape an SS massacre that left thousands of Jews dead,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Rita M. Glavin, said in a written statement Thursday. “His court-ordered removal from the United States to Austria is another milestone in the government’s long-running effort to ensure that individuals who participated in crimes against humanity do not find sanctuary in this country.”

I don't know how I feel about this. On one hand he did some VERY horrible things. On the other hand, he's 83yo. That is really tough.

Yeah I see what you mean -- but at the same time I think to myself, he got to be 83 yrs old because he survived after murdeing so many people.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that he must have lied at some point on his citizenship application -- because on it -- it specifically asks if you were ever a part of the SS or acted as a Nazi during WWII and committed crimes or atrocities.

We see a little old man today, but he still is a murderer who should pay for his crimes.

I was a little unsure at first because of his age, but then I thought the same thing as you. This guy was/is a monster & needs to be held accountable for his actions, regardless of his age. He's lucky he made it to 83... Chat Icon

You should see the movie The Reader. It deals with this issue (war crimes).

Age doesn't absolve you of your crimes. The man is a heinous murderer. Far worse could have been done than sending him back to Austria.

ITA. The families of the men, women, and children who were massacred and each of their famlies would have loved to live to ripe old ages. It KILLS me that he lived out the prime of his life in the safety and comfort of Racine Wisconsin for over FIFTY years. THIS country afforded him all of the freedoms, comforts, and opportunities that those whom he slaughtered never knew again. Chat Icon

ITA! It makes me sick to think he had the chance to have a family and grandchildren while all the people he murdered weren't given a chance to have a life. Just disgusting!!!Chat Icon

I cannot get this out of my head all day...
"Kumpf acknowledged his role was as a guard and an assassin at the Trawniki Labor Camp, where 8,000 men, women and children were shot dead in a single day"

I just can't. There is no statute of limitations on murder. What he did...beyond murder.

Thank you-as the grandaughter of an Auschwitz survivor, I think they should make his life as miserable as possible at this point. He is lucky he got away this long.

Re: Nazi Guard Deported to Austria

We aren't talking about an innocent, stupid, young mistake.

EIGHT THOUSAND PEOPLE he assisted in killing over 2 days. EIGHT THOUSAND innocent men, women and yes, ladies, probably hundreds, if not thousands, of CHILDREN.

Not because they were murderers. Not because they were rapists, molesters, or had committed serious felonies.

All because they believed in a minority religion.

Because of his solitary actions, lives were lost senselessly, and family legacies stopped short of what they could have become. To think of all the potential lives he cut short that could have lived to the ripe old age of 83, watched their children grow instead of suffer, and enjoy the pitter patter of their future generations.

I don't care how old this man his. What he did was an atrocity, and by hiding from the truth, he was, and still is, a coward, no matter what age. He is an atrocity of mankind and deserves to suffer the worse of fates...
