He says, "more" (for more food, etc)
and "yay!"
and "ah na!" (which means "all done!")

but, he understands everything you say; if asked to go get a book/ball/turn off the tv , etc - he does it.

I know at his next appointment in March they will say he has to go to get EI.

Anyone else have a late talker?
What can EI do that I can't do myself?
I'd be super worried, but he understands everything.

I think you should contact EI. You do not need your dr's approval to do so.

I heard it can be faster & easier if you set it up through the ped. I mean, they will definately refer him, right?

I've never heard of that. My ped. was not involved at all in DS's EI services, other than he had to write a prescription for him to receive OT and that was only for insurance coverage.

Once you contact them they will come to your house and interview you, than send therapists to do an evaluation and start services. It was a quick process for us.

JMO, I wouldnt wait. A speech therapist is way more qualified than you are to help him with speech. They will offer advice and activities for you to do at home with him inbetween sessions.

I would give them a call tomorrow and get the ball rolling. My DS showed progress within a few weeks!

Your Ped didnt mention it to you at the 18 month mark?

You don't need your Ped..and its not any faster...but you can wait for sure, or just call to get the phone number.

EI works wonders in my opinion.

My son's first word was not till he was 22 months old ( dada and mama) and now 9 months later he doesnt shut up Chat Icon

they mentioned it briefly, (mid suff pediatrics) but they chalked it up to him being lazy. His very vocal and laughs and makes excited noises, and his hearing was fine. They said since he understood so much and followed directions, etc, that if he still wasn't talking at 2, we'd go for EI.

You don't need anything from your ped. Call the county directly. A coordinator will set up an appointment to meet with you and ask your concerns. They will then set up a speech eval (or any other evals you may want)

An evaluator will come in and sit and play with your son. It's very informal and fun for the kids. They will get a better idea of where he stands and either refer you to get speech therapy, or he will not qualify.

ETA: My son understood everything at 15 and 18 months. He still got approved. Receptive is different then expressive.

To answer your question "What can they do that you don't" - this is their trained profession. They know tons of tricks to help kids along faster than we as parents do. I also personally believe (at least with my son) that he will sit and listen to a stranger, much more then he does to me. He will play with his therapist for an hour - I'm lucky if I get 15 minutes in one shot.
