Murder-suicide

There was a murder suicide yesterday in the neighborhood next to mine. I read in the article that they moved to Florida from Suffolk County a few years ago, so I'm posting this in case someone might know them. They leave behind 3 small children. Chat Icon

Three small children were orphaned Tuesday night when their parents died in what St. Cloud police have described as a murder-suicide.

Margret Puig Durinick, 37, and her husband, Christopher Edward Durinick, 36, had been involved in a domestic dispute at their home in the 800 block of Chamberlin Trail on Tuesday night when she ran to her neighbor's house, police said.

She pounded on the front door of the home of neighbor Leo English, and when he opened the door, Margret begged for help, according to police.

That was when Christopher, carrying a rifle commonly used by deer hunters, shot his wife once from less than 100 feet away, police said. She collapsed in English's front doorway.

English then retrieved his own .38-caliber revolver and fired at Christopher, striking him in the abdomen. Christopher returned to his own home and shot himself fatally on the front porch, according to police.

Officers responding to the couple's home about 8:54 p.m. found Margret seriously injured and transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

On Wednesday morning, English's home was surrounded by crime-scene tape. His actions – although not what police recommend people to do when faced with a dangerous situation – are not being investigated.

Police spoke with English, who is said to be distraught by what happened, Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

"What he did was pretty heroic," said St. Cloud police Capt. Bret Dunn.

The couple's three children, ages 6, 3 and 1, were asleep during the incident. Police said.

Florida Department of Children and Families officials confirm that the agency responded to the scene Tuesday night, but that relatives who live nearby took custody of the children. Public records show that Christopher Durinick's parents live on the same street, and police confirmed that two of his brothers also live on the street.

Members of Durinick's family declined to speak with media on Wednesday.

Public records indicate that the Durinicks moved to Central Florida about six years ago from Suffolk County, New York, and purchased their four-bedroom, three-bathroom home. Records also show the couple filed for voluntary Chapter 13 bankruptcy reorganization in September 2006. The case ended in January 2007.

Police said there were no indications of violence in the past, but that family members had said the couple had talked about divorce. It's unclear which of the two might have sought to dissolve the marriage.

On her Facebook page, Margret wrote that she worked as a greeter at Universal Studios Florida. On his own page, Christopher wrote several times of his love for his wife and thanked her for "dealing with" him.

The investigation is ongoing.
