Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

I need advice!

My son used to be a good sleeper. At 2 1/2 month he was sleeping through the night. Then a few weeks later, he decided he was done with that. Then a few weeks after that, he was getting up 4 times a night!!!! 3 weeks ago, we had to quit swaddling (long story) and it has gone pretty well. However, he's still waking up a lot!!!

I work full time and i need my sleep back. I knew that 1/2 the time he was waking up was for comfort and out of habit. So we started just giving him his pacifier or holding him and rocking him back to sleep. Then i woke up and realized what the hell am i doing?!?!? He has to learn to self soothe himself back to sleep.

So we started a little CIO. It went well. The first night, he cried for 10 minutes and went back to sleep until 2:30 for a feeding. Then he slept until 6:30am. Success! The 2nd night he cried for 4 minutes and was up at 1am for a feeding. But then he was up at 4am, 5am and 6am. UGH!!!! Last night he cried for 15 minutes before i went in and fed him. Then he was up every 3 hours after that.

what do i do???? do i let him CIO for as long as he goes? and each time he wakes up?

The other problem we were having is i thought he was consuming a good amount of ounces at night instead of during the day, which was also not helping. After the first night of CIO, he started eating 5-6 ounces again instead of 3-4 (as he previously had been eating). But now i feel like we're going backwards.

HELP!!!!! I can't take much more of this!!!! Suggestions? ideas? instructions?

*I thought about using ferbers method, but honestly i think it would p*ss my son off even more. Chat Icon

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

alot of studies show that you shouldn't do CIO before 6 months - but I do know people on here who have been successful before then.

I did it at 6 months and couldn't go back in after I put him down - it would make him much much worse.

Also - do you have the sleepsack? I used that after I transitioned him from a swadddler.

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

Because you are back to work and need your sleep- I totally empathize!!!!- I think a little CIO might do you good. From what I undedrstand it is the fastest method and since he was already once a good sleeper I don't think it will be as traumatic for him as for a child who has let's say been co-sleeping. KWIM?

Good luck. We're moving backwards too over here Chat Icon

IMO, I think 4 months is too young to CIO...Is he eating enough ounces during the day? At 4 months, DD was no longer waking in the middle of the night to eat.

Did you try the dreamfeed. We used to wake Katelyn up around 11pm before we went to bed and gave her a bottle, she really didn't even wake up, just sucked down the bottle and went right back to sleep and then would sleep till 6-7am.

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

DD is almost 5 months and we have had a similar issue. She was waking often after 3 months old and we could easily get her to go back to sleep with just a 1-2 min. pacifier/shhh...but it was happening too often.

I read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and have been following it. It's been working well. DD goes from 7pm-7am and wakes for 2 feedings (she isn't a big eater and this flows with what the book says). Her naps don't exactly follow the book but she is well rested throughout the day with what she takes. Maybe try reading that book.

Remember I told you that I failed? This is where I failed.

I will say that letting Christopher have his blankie (no flames please!) at that age was a HUGE help. I kind of forced it on him, but it is now a WONDERFUL self soother!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know what your response is going to be and I hate to say it, but here it comes...if he had a nap schedule and was sleeping consitently during the day, I think he would sleep a lot better during the night.

Read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.

I personally do not believe that 4 months old is too young, but I know many people disagree.

My son has been a very good sleeper since 10 weeks (knock on wood) and I thank that book.

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

I am sorry, but I agree with the others....4.5 months is too young for CIO...he needs you to comfort and soothe him at that age. I know this is probably not what you want to hear but I would hold off on CIO for a few more months Chat Icon

We do give him a little comfort blankie. It's tiny. But it doesn't seem to do too much right now.

Well we do have him on a schedule, however my MIL watches him sometimes and so that schedule doesn't always stick.

But also there are days when he takes hour and a half naps and then there are days when those naps are only 45 minutes.

I will say that i don't really think the schedule during the day is the problem. You'd be surprised Rachelle, but my MIL is actually trying to stick to his napping schedule that we gave her. He has been napping at her house and i can tell because he hasn't been cranky when i get him home, like he used to be.

I think previously that he wasn't consuming enough ounces during the day and was making up for it at night. That mixed in with waking for comfort... and there you go!

To answer someone else's question, co sleeping is not an option for us.

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

Have you tried putting him on his belly? That's a personal choice but both of my DC were belly sleepers from the start. My DS is 4 months old and I couldn't possibly do CIO right now. We started with DD at 8 months or so and it was HARD but worked eventually.

I agree with the good nap schedule during the day. If DS doesn't sleep good during the day then he is up at least 2 times at night. He used to sleep 12 to 13 hours from VERY early on but recently has been going down at about 7 and gets up between 4 and 5 for a bottle, then goes right back down till 7ish. I think at this age they still need to eat/be comforted. Good luck.

Oh i agree. I don't care if he gets up at 2am for a feeding. But i just can't handle the 4 times a night. It's just too much for my husband and i who work FT. My ped said at this age, they should not be getting up that much, not to mention the reading i've done has said the same.

As for the belly, he HATES tummy time with a passion so i think that idea is out. Chat Icon

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

I think he is way to young for CIO but what do I know I am not a fan of CIO LOL.

Are you sure its not from teething? Christopher was the exact same way. He slept through the night until 4 months old from there on he would wake up multiple times a night. He was a horrible teether. He just started sleeping through the night at 2.

I agree - sometimes interrupted sleep is worse than no sleep at all! Some days at work I truly feel like a zombie and hungover. I guess it's that whole "every kid is different" thing and when one phase ends...another one begins.Chat Icon Not words of encouragement...but just reality.Chat Icon

Did you start cereal? I tried that and he actually slept worse so I stopped doing that.

Chat Icon my suggestion is that you comfort him when he needs it...is that better?

good luck with whatever you decide to do. There is a reason why many doctors and professional says to wait until 6 months....that is the age, at the earliest when they can self soothe

He may be teething like someone else mentioned. How does he eat during the day? when he wakes up at night, do you feed him again?

Re: Moms who used CIO or a sleep training method

we didn't do CIO until later, but we always gave ourselves a time limit. Going to sleep we would let her cry for a certain amount of mins and when she woke during the night we gave her a certain amount of time also before we would go in there. We have the video monitor so we could see if she was really awake or still had her eyes closed and was crying. We would turn the sound down and just watch her to make sure she's not getting too upset. This is what helped us. Kaydyn still wakes up several times a night but haven't had to go in there to get her in probably a month....she's been able to put herself back to sleep.

I tried a few weeks ago and every couple of days since and he wants nothing to do with solids. You would think since he's my kid, he'd love food. But nope! Chat Icon Chat Icon
