Mom is driving me nuts tonight...
Be honest...tell me if I am wrong?
Me, my husband, sister and mom went out to unos for dinner tonight. When the check came, I felt as if my dh and I put too much money in. I said to my mom...I dont understand, I think we paid a little too much. She grabbed the check out of my hand and started adding up all her stuff. She goes..well I gave you the right amount. I didnt harp on it, I just said ok and let it be. When we left the restaurant she wouldnt even speak to me! We dropped her and my sister off at home...she didnt even say goodnight...hopped out of the car, slammed the door and didnt look back.
Now...we obviously arent made out of money. If there was something wrong and we felt that we gave too much there was either something wrong with the people at the table and/or the check itself. Would you say something..even if it was to your mom? I am thinking I offended her by saying we paid too much..maybe she thinks that I was calling her cheap or something but I didnt say it bad. What do you think?

Oh - she was definitely offended, but do I think you were wrong - no. Some people just get more easily offended than others. I'm one for splitting checks evenly but if it's my mom I always treat. I have a different situation though - she watches my kids whenever we need her, shops for me etc.
I've taken her out for lunch (about $50) and had her tell me that she picked up some cleaner at the store & I owe her $3.47. That's just her thing - grew up neglected & worried about money. I grew up differently so I have a different take on money than she does.
Life is too short. Rather than wonder what you did wrong, I'd just ask her directly. "I didn't mean to offend you the other night but get the feeling I might have."

Give her a day then tell her you didn't mean anything by it, that things are tight right now and you have to watch your spending. Trust me, she'll get over it!!
