Ok, I'll be the minority here. I don't think it's cool that her 17 year old smokes, I don't like smoking. But honestly, she'll be 18 in a matter of months and I'd rather know what my childern are doing no matter how bad, than to have them do it behind my back.

Melanie Griffith is an addict. She spent time in Hazelden. Smoking is an addictive behavior. You'd think she'd know better.

I think its one thing to know what they are doing but its another to condone/encourage it. Her lighting the cancer stick for her is doing just that.
Before I was 21 I would go out to clubs/bars and drink with my friends.. My mom knew and wasn't happy but couldn't really stop me. That didn't mean she would pour me a drink at home though.

to be honest, i have NEVER seen melanie as a role model.....
and not for nothing, although i am against smoking and all, yes, its trashy of her, BUT i have known PLENTY of mothers that are aware their 15 16 17 yr old kids smoke. i had some distant relatve who was 17 and she was drinking and smoking with her mom. Trashy? YES. uncommon? NO.
the girl probably started when she was like 12 yrs old and by now her mom has grown to accept it.
like i said, im not defending her actions, but its not uncommon imo. i know ALOT of parents who are the "if shes gonna do it, id rather she do it with me" kind of attitude.
