Mountbatten-Windsor is technically their last name.
I think Archie is cute but I agree, odd for royals to go with a nickname.
My DD’s name is a nickname and she is often called the “proper” name associated with it. Maybe I started a trend

I don’t mind the name and I think it’s pretty cute.
The Mountbatten-Windsor is technically his “legal” last name. Mountbatten is Phillip’s last name, which was changed from Battenberg. They changed it because it was too German sounding at the time of the wars. It’s an English translation from German, I think. Berg is Mountain in German. The royals are all kind of related to each other in some form or another in the different houses throughout Europe. Windsor is the house name.
I believe he can also use Sussex as his “formal” last name, but I think that depends on if he is granted HRH or not. I’m not sure of the details on that. If anyone could chime in on that, that would be great.
I think George, Charlotte, and Louis use Cambridge because of the territory that Kate and William have.
I think it was a take on the name Arthur to be honest. Archibald does have a few appearances in the royal family tree, but I think Arthur is more common. I know that betting places had high odds on Arthur.
I read somewhere that Harrison is not a royal name, but it means son of Harry.
ETA: William and Harry used Wales as a surname because of Prince Charles. But when they get married they get a new territory name, hence Cambridge or Sussex. They don’t really have last names.

I read that she tried but ended up having to go to the hospital to give birth. which is why I am thinking she didn't give birth at the hospital where I think a lot of royals give birth.
