I'm sort of in the same boat. I started my job mid-January. I am not covered under FMLA either. Plus, I am the one with the medical plan - DH has been out of a job since mid-February. I have been so stressed about this...mainly the health insurance aspect. We can handle not having a salary for a little while - but having to pay for COBRA would s uck so badly if I'm not being paid.

Does DH's firm offer insurance? A lot of plans will let you sign up outside of open enrollment if you have a life event-i.e. the birth of a baby. He might he able to get insurance, it's worth a try.

He lost his job in February - so I'm the sole breadwinner & health insurance carrier. Blah!

Re: Maternity Leave ...I need your thoughts ladies...

why does it have to be 6 weeks OR 3 months? can't you try to negotiate for 10 weeks or something like that? Unpaid - as FMLA is unpaid as well.

but I do agree with everyone - don't resign until after the birth. Even if you go back after the 6 weeks and give 2 weeks notice then.

Because that is what I want, and that i what I planned to take before getting hired here.

Ok, don't take this the wrong way, but I agree with Ellie, I mean, if you like your job and see yourself growing there then maybe a compromise can be reached. I think it is rather harsh to say to them that you won't compromise at all, if I were your boss then I wouldn't necessarily want to compromise with you either since you JUST want three months. What if they would give you 10 weeks, then 2 weeks working from home or something?

Listen, it is really scary to have a newborn and no job to go back to. I, too, am on DH's health insurance and I am even getting unemployment and it STILL freaks me out, I don't want to have to look for a new job with an infant at home and if I were you then maybe I would see if there is something that you could work out with them.

No offense taken. Everyone is entitled to think/feel what they want. It's not that I "JUST" want 3 months, I want to have that time for me and her. i don't think that's asking for alot..at all. ESPECIALLY given the fact that they've known what I wanted to take from the beginning.

That being said, I never said I wouldn't compromise, I just don't want to have to. Working from home, while an option, is NOT exactly the most convenient either. This job expects alot, has stress and demands that quite frankly, I do not want to have to deal with when I am home taking care of my daughter.

Either way, if it comes down to them not approving my leave, I'll take my 6 weeks of leave and then give my notice and look for something else when I'm ready.

Yeah, definitely let us know how the meeting goes. I'm so curious what they're going to say to you.

I totally understand why you want that uninterrupted time with your newborn. Hope the meeting goes well. Chat Icon
