Make Up and Little Girls..

I have a boy, so I am clueless, but what do most people do when it comes to make up?

I recently saw a picture of a 4 year old at family event (religious) wearing bright red lipstick.

Now, I know kids can be tough and sometimes it is easier not to fight the battle, but is that normal?

Re: Make Up and Little Girls..

I guess it's a personal thing but I am 100% against it. My Mom sometimes wants to put a little make up on my DD when she's applying her own (for fun around the house) and I told her absolutely not. My DD is 5 and I don't want her going there anytime soon, even for fun. I am keeping her small and away from anything grown up for as long as I can.

ETA: I don't think a 4 yr old with bright red lipstick is the norm. Maybe some parents are OK with gloss or something milder but def think the red lipstick is unusual.

Re: Make Up and Little Girls..

Ella (3) will NOT be wearing makeup for a long long time. She has her "lipsticks" but they're just pretty scented chapsticks with no color. She plays with my makeup brushes, but not with any product on them (Erik plays with them too Chat Icon)

I was hesitant to even paint her toes, but I did for her birthday.

My guess is it was about choosing your battles & that parent didn't feel like it was worth the fight. Depending on the kid, I may or may not agree with it. My daughter is pretty easy when it comes to saying no, so at 6 yo, it's a battle I would choose to fight. If the kid was a tough kid, it may have been the factor on getting her to go to that party.

I don't like nailpolish & the only way Maddie got to wear it is if she stopped sucking her thumb. It worked for a while but if she promised it again, I might let her wear lipgloss.Chat Icon

I agree with you, I think the bright red shocked me though, but I don't even own that, so that's probably whyChat Icon

I don't plan on letting Jaidy wear makeup anytime soon. I hardly ever wear makeup so I don't think it will be too big of an issue. I do polish her toes thoughChat Icon

I absolutely, 100% agree with choosing your battles. However, this IS definitely a battle I would fight. My DD will not be allowed to wear makeup outside the house for probably a decade, I'm sure.

I do paint DD's toes (since I paint mine) but I don't wear ANY make up so she doesn't even know what it is.

I do let her put on one of those berry scented chapsticks for kids since I wear chapstick. I didn't realize it was tinted when I bought it, so I tossed it and got her a clear one. She really doesn't care after the first day or 2. Like everything else the novelty wore off fast.

I'm not a fan of makeup especially on children. I think their natural beauty is so wonderful that I'd never want to taint it with makeup.

Re: Make Up and Little Girls..

Maybe at 4 I would let her put on clear lipgloss but nothing else. Definitely not bright red lipstick but that's just me. I'm not trying to make her grow up faster than she has to. I looooooove make up for me but I think it should be reserved for teens and up...and even then it should be toned down. No need to make a young girl look older..don't see the point.

My dd is almost 4 and almost every day when I'm getting ready for work or to go somewhere she watches me put on my makeup. So if she asks, I usually put a little blush on her cheeks and a light/sheer lipstick/lipgloss color. She does wear nailpolish regularly.

I dont mind it, but i also dont want her to look like a clown.

AND i make sure I tell her that she does not need makeup to be beautiful, but she wants to be like mommy I guess Chat Icon

(I would never let her wear bright red)

Re: Make Up and Little Girls..

DD watches me put on my make up and loves when I brush her nose with a puff. But there is nothing on it.

I'm anti makeup for little girls. However, DD is 2 so it's not an issue yet. I can see her asking in a few years and it's a fight I would fight through and through.

I would say makeup on kids is not the norm, and bright red lipstick is definitely not the norm.

Re: Make Up and Little Girls..

I don't think that makeup is appropriate for children. The only time we were allowed to wear it as children was when we were in dance recitals. After that I think my mom started to allow it once we reached middle school. My DD is 2 and has had her toes painted once, that I think is ok. I let her pretend to put some one with clean brushes, but I haven't put any on her.

I don't think it's abnormal. While I don't encourage my daughter to wear lipstick if she asks so she can be like mommy have no issue with letting her have a little, especially if she's all dressed up for something. Going to school or to the park I would probably say no.

Re: Make Up and Little Girls..

My daughter often wears lipgloss, and sometimes when I am doing makeup she will put some on too.

I really don't see the harm in it. She is just mimicking me, and learning what it is to be a girl. I don't think it means anything beyond that. It's innocent child play.

This is my DD too!

I do buy her the Princess or Hello Kitty Lip Gloss and sometimes when she sees me putting make up on she does too. I really don't see anything wrong w/ it.

I think I would let her wear some if she wanted to. Probably lip gloss, but not much more.

I let my son wear the clothes he picks out, even though sometimes he looks a little crazy. Chat Icon

I wouldn't encourage it, but I don't think it's a battle I would fight either. Not at 4 anyway.

Are you sure she was wearing red lipstick? I am asking because my cousins DD has bright red lips, I mean BRIGHT red and it always looks like she is wearing lipstick. My cousin is very self conscious of it because she knows people will assume that she allows her DD to wear lipstick and have an opinion of it.

At 4 years old, no I would not allow my DD to wear any makeup, unless she wanted some of my gloss which is light color or clear. I have no issues with nail polish, I think it's cute on little girls.

Re: Make Up and Little Girls..

I take Ava to get her nails painted at the salon for special occasions. She loves to get nail art like snow men or flowers painted on. I also paint them at home. So I have no issue with polish. I am totally skeeved by long or dorty nails on a kid, so I am on top of that.

As far as make up, sometimes we put a little blush or lip gloss on if we (me or my Mom are getting ready and she wants some.

But what really irritates me, is when people buy DD "make up kits". SIL gave one to Ava yesterday as one of her belated B-Day gifts. She had llip gloss of every color on her lips, cheeks and eylips. Then it was on her hands, clothes, the walls (from her touching them) and my bathroom towels...So FYI gift givers....NOOOOOOO make up gifts for little girls, unles you want them to use it exclusively at YOUR house!!!!! Thank You!!
