Lovenox and preservatives
I just filled my prescription for my Lovenox injections. Boy, I sure am looking forward to my daily shots
I have a question about something I read in the "Precautions" section. It says "Since enoxaparin (the other name for Lovenox - or maybe generic, i don't know) vials contain benzyl alcohol that can affect the unborn baby,, the preservative-free drug in the manufacturer's syringes is preferred.
Does anyone know about this????? Does anyone take Lovenox preservative free? How do i know if my box is preservative free? I bet its not b/c it doesn't say.
I am very very upset. I am someone that wanted to be really natural with this birth, but b/c of possible health issues, i can't. But to think that I can be harming my baby with these treatments horrifies me. I feel so helpless.

Re: Lovenox and preservatives
Lovenox doesn't have a generic alternative, the only thing you can have is the pre-filled syringes. My RE, my OB, and my hematologist all know of and approve of my use of lovenox. I don't think past that I know without it, I could have blood clots which could affect my babies - and if you have to take it then you have clotting issues which you should be more concerned about than possible issues with preservatives.
I have been taking lovenox since the beginning of my pregnancy and the babies are doing just fine.

Thanks. I just think everything these days is freaking me out. I am just so nervous about everything! Believe me, I am plenty concerned about my possible clotting issue as well.

Re: Lovenox and preservatives
Thankfully the generics haven't gotten their tainted hands on Lovenox yet. I still remember going through h*ll getting heparin when I was PG, good ol' generic. Personally I'm anti-generics (talk about not knowing what you are getting and when they make it in other countries... look out!), but that's a whole other ball of wax.
I noticed you mentioned you wanted to do as much natural as possible. This was me too when I first found out I was PG. Unfortunately, nothing about having these disorders brings upon much that is natural. Any risk of a preservative, outweighs the benefits by a landslide of having a healthy pregnancy and baby. I remember when i was first PG I came to this site for support, many of us on here take or took Lovenox. I remember the first time the doctor told me my labor was going to be induced. I wanted to cry b/c I was "natural" obsessed too. Then I realized that it wouldn't be "all natural", but "all natural" contrary to popular opinion isn't always what is best. What they told me made sense - I had to switch to Heparin in the last few weeks of the pregnancy twice a day, then 2 days before the induction they'd have me stop all blood thinning meds. On top of everything else the last thing I wanted was an "unnatural" c/s. However, DD's heart rate was being affected by the induction so we did the c/s. Holding her in my arms that first time, I couldn't care about "natural" or "unnatural".
I wish you the best... fm me for support if ya like. I've been there not long ago and will be back where your at very soon.

Thank you for your reply. First of all, I want to say it is nice to hear that someone else feels as I do about generic medication. I have also had trouble with generic and I find it frightening. Other countries????? Sheesh. I am really scared.
Also, thank you for speaking about your experience with your "unnatural" birth. I understand and agree with everything you said. I am not looking to be a hero or martyr, of course i want to do what is best. Fortunately or unfortunately, the Lovenox made me nauseous and gave me stomach problems, so I am going to start baby aspirin (which, in the past has given me stomach problems as well, but we will see). My situation is not very cut and dry with my "clotting issue", so I have very mixed feelings about the medications and the advice the doctors are giving me. But I really hope that everything works out in the end.
BTW, I found out the preservative is in the multi-dose vial, not the single dose vials that is given to us pregnant people.
