Let's talk shingles vs. "regular" vinyl siding cost
If we do a shingle look on the front facade only (the fake flat one!!!) and do the other sides in the regular horizontal vinyl, how much more would it cost us on average?

The shake shingle look siding costs about 3-4x more (material + labor) than regular vinyl.
This is why many people only do it on the front. I am actually having my entire house done in shake, and on a two story colonial its

The material cost is definitely more, but the labor shouldn't be. It's the same material as the clapboard siding, just stamped differently.

they list some prices of different vinyl siding from Certainteed.
The cheaper, straight panel siding is $5.49 s/f. The shingle look is $7.18 s/f.
It's more, but not a huge amount more. We have just the front of our house with the Cedar Impressions shingle look, and the other 3 sides are the same color, but the cheaper clapboard style.
The entire house in straight siding was about $9k. It was an additional $3k to do the front in Cedar Impressions.
The front of the house is 2 stories, about 60' across, so almost 1000 s/f of frontage. That comes out to about $3 s/f additional for the cedar look.

yep we got estimates for front only and we couldn't afford it so we are waiting until we can afford it.
