Kitchen Remodel

We had our first meeting with a contractor to get our kitchen redone. We are changing our cabinets, countertop, and sinks. No new appliances, flooring, electric or change in layout. They said the range is 70-120K. Chat Icon Chat Icon for a kitchen remodel. My house is only worth 240K (I don;t live on LI).

Is this guy for real? From what I read, this contractor is on the higher end for prices, but still. I figured 25K.

With that said, if you got your kitchen redone recently, how much was it? If you did it yourself, how long were you without a kitchen? My DH and I have done a lot of projects ourselves like a deck and patio, but I don't want to be without a kitchen for months....

Re: Kitchen Remodel

We just did this.
It's hard to say because we had other work done as well by the contractor (redoing a wall and windows in our bedroom, redoing a wall in the kitchen area and putting in a new slider, changing out some baseboards my DH wasn't happy with while we had the plumber in )
But if i had to deduct the extras I'd say probably about $35 k for just the kitchen part.
We went with higher end cabinets and finishes too.
We did not move anything other than the dishwasher from one side of the sink to the other for layout purposes.
We also had brand new appliances so we didn't need new appliances.
Basically demoed everything to the studs, new cabinets, new sheetrock, new tile floor, moved some lighting around, added pendant lights over our table area, etc.
DH did all the painting and finish (moldings other than the cabinet moldings) himself.
Your estimate seems insanely high.
But I will add our kitchen is pretty small. Not sure how big yours is that would make a difference.

And even with the pros doing it we were without a functional kitchen for about 3 weeks.
DH does everything himself- including full bathroom demos, building an outdoor bar, etc- but he knew the kitchen would be just too much to take on by himself. And he's retired.
If you are trying to do this around working too, I'd highly advise not to.

Kitchen Remodel

Thanks!

Our kitchen is definitely on the smaller side. I am getting more quotes in the near future. I think we need to go with a contractor not a fancy company. This was a company like Allure on LI.

Yes! Go with a local contractor. These companies are way way expensive.

I have a small kitchen but picked higher end items. We did a lot of work to the house but my guess is we spent less than 30k 3 years ago.
We had a great experience with Home Depot and I’ve read good reviews about Lowe’s.

We're at the tale end of our remodel. We ordered the cabinets and countertops through lowes. We didn't go with high end but I guess middle of the road and spent a fraction of that estimate (including appliances). We installed everything ourselves aside from the countertops. We did the last of the demo new year's eve and the countertops should be installed next week so just over a month and we'll only have a few things like molding and the backsplash left.

Re: Kitchen Remodel

That seems ridiculous! We just had a contractor in to talk about doing our kitchen remodel and our range is from $65k - $95k and we're taking down walls and going into the garage. Yours should definitely be closer to $20k in my opinion.

Re: Kitchen Remodel

Allure wanted 150 to 200 to do my parents kitchen..they redid it for 40. I am sure allure does a great job, but it cost too much for them. I would keep looking.

I do not want to do it ourselves. Trust me - that is my last resort.

Unless their kitchen was the size of my entire house that is insanity.
I feel like you can burn the house to the ground and rebuild it for that.

My ILs were like if you spend 120K on the kitchen, you should just move to a new build in your area for like 400K. LOL

we did a wall cutout with counter over it to double as an island, and have a pretty big L-shaped kitchen. Kept our flooring and appliances, but did quartz counters, all new lighting and added some extra outlets. Total for our IKEA kitchen was $15,000 but we had a great price on labor. Total for other quotes we received never exceeded 27k. Most quotes we got were for mid-range white wood cabinets.

ETA: we have a large pantry, 11 upper cabinets, 10 lower cabinets, built in wine fridge, and pull-out garbage cabinet. On the island side, we have two large cabinets as well. We have caesarstone quartz

Re: Kitchen Remodel

That is insane!! We completetly gutted our kitchen and it was less than 20k.

We had Allure give us a quote and, while the sales guy was really nice, the prices were just crazy.

We gutted our master bath, 1/2 bath and kitchen and it all took one month. We went with a local contractor recommended by our neighbor.

Re: Kitchen Remodel

I am going through this now as I need a bathroom contractor to do a repair. The prices Long Island contractors charge in general is absolutely absurd. There is just too much work to be done and not enough contractors so the contractors can pick and choose the jobs they want and overprice on everything.

With my house in Palm Beach Florida I do not have these issues. Can find good contractors at respectful rates.
