Just learned that my mother has to have a hysterectomy...Has anyone been through this?

I don't think she is nervous about the surgery as much as staying in the hospital.

I feel bad for her, but I think this is the best thing to do for her at this point! There is a cyst growing and they have been watching it for over a year and now have recommended surgery.

My mom had one when I was 7, so I can't be too much of a help.

But the recovery is pretty much the same as when you have a C-Section...

My mother had a hysterectomy around the same time I started college. She had no complications and is much better now. I don';t know excatly what was wrong, but I know before the hysterectomy she was constantly hemmoraging.

Re: Just learned that my mother has to have a hysterectomy...Has anyone been through this?

My Mom had one in June. She found out suddenly that she had a tumor. She just started bleeing and at 74 that was a worry. They did a full hysteractomy - uterus and ovaries. She also had a small growth on her appendix and they removed that.

She ended up being in hospital for 10 days (in Ireland, where they don't push you out so quickly). She was really tired for weeks after but she eventually bounced back. She's really strong and healthy so by the time I saw her 2 months later she was literally running around.

I hope all goes well with your mother's surgery. I'm sure it will Chat Icon Chat Icon Don't be surprised if she's not herself for a month or more.

I had one when I was 32. I had so many problems since I was 16 that it was such a relief to have it done and not have the worries anymore. I had cysts. fibroids, endometrosis etc plus cervical cancer. It totally changed my life for the better. I'm sure my family and friends were happy too!

Best of luck to your MomChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My mom is in the EXACT same situation right now. She had been ignoring the cysts for years now, and now she is past the point of tolerance, and was recm'd to have a hysterectomy.

Thank you for sharing, and whatever info I come up with, I'll send your way. Chat Icon

My MIL had one done. She was having some major issues and the hysterectomy was the only solution. She is doing wonderfully now.

Mine too! Actually when I just started college. She was also constantly hemmoraging. My mom lost about 30 lbs from the surgery because the cyst was the size of a canteloupe. My mom did fine. Recovery really wasn't too bad from what I remember.

My mom had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago and she is so thankful that she had it done. At the time she had fibroids (sp?) and they were causing her pain and she was in serious menopause - the hysterectomy stopped all of that and she is so thankful for it.

The recovery is the hardest part, but she will be ok. Keep us posted on how she is doing.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Just learned that my mother has to have a hysterectomy...Has anyone been through this?

My mom had a hysterectomy almost 4 years ago. Believe it or not the worst part of her recovery (TMI WARNING...)was the gas pain. The surgery itself was not that bad (according to her) and the pain meds they gave her she really only took to quell the gas pains. She was able to walk around only 2 days later. She was not able to bend or lift for several weeks though. I also remember that she had a hard time doing the dishes b/c she had to stand weird cuz her sink was low...

If the doctors are recommending it I would honestly get a second opinion though. Especially if she has not yet gone through menopause. (my mom was post-menopausal & had cancer so she had no choice).

Re: Just learned that my mother has to have a hysterectomy...Has anyone been through this?

my mom had one back in '99. she also had fibroids and was bleeding a lot!!! She had a few D&Cs, but they only helped temporarily. She was out of work for about 6 weeks.

As a result of the surgery, her bladder became prolapsed and she needed another surgery to correct that too.

She's all better and only has a check up once a year. Chat Icon

My mom had one maybe 6 or 7 years ago. She had fibroids. The recovery was a little painful. She needed a lot of help in the beginning, getting around the house, etc... She was out of work for 6 weeks, I think.

I know of quite a few people that have gone through the surgery. It is very common and all who have had it have come through with flying colors.

Re: Just learned that my mother has to have a hysterectomy...Has anyone been through this?

My Mom had this done to her when I was in 5th grade (11/12 years old).

I was scared sh*tless b/c I was so young and I didn't like the fact that the priest came to give her last rights, and that my mother was in the hospital.

Anyways, she had a 3 month recovery with staples down the middle of her stomach. I helped her each morning put her girdle on that was velcrow that the DR had given her to wear to keep the sutures in place and to keep any blood from getting on her clothes. She couldn't bend up/down, and she had to take a lot of pills, even to this day.

The pills make her feet swell up so by the end of the day, she can't get her sneakers off, but that's the only real side effect I've seen.

My mom had one when she was 38 and is fine - my brother's MIL just had one about a year ago and she is 60. Both are fine, it's probably the best thing for her.

Good luck to your mom and prayers to you for the strength to be with her during this.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My mother had one when I was in 5th grade. I remember she was in the hospital for a week. She recovered very well.

These days, the surgery is so advanced, I am sure she will be fine and home quickley!
